At the end of the war Jürgen gets captured and sent to Fort Bliss in Huntsville, Alabama to work as a rocket scientist once again. The German Wife recently published this summer, and it is the story of Operation Paperclip, of which I was vaguely familiar. The depth of the two wives’ animosity, and the impetus for the harassment that follows, with potentially tragic consequences, is a feeling can be better understood from the events in their lives that led up to their current situation.

Fans of Orphan Train, The Tattooist of Auschwitz and My Name is Eva will be utterly gripped by this beautiful, tragic World War Two novel.I’d be honored and thrilled if you choose to enjoy and follow along (see subscribe or follow option), promote, and/or share my blog. Themes: Thought-provoking themes include fear of people because of their nationality, starting over, survival, grief, acceptance, PTSD, atrocities and effects of war, life-changing choices, turning a blind eye, hardship, friendship, and prejudice. Eventually, Jurgen faces an unenviable dilemma “I’m trapped on this path where my work is building to something heinous. while it’s based on a true story, at the end of the day it is fiction and i can 100% understand any criticism this book receives. Lizzie for me was a very different character a little harder for me to like but she really did have a hard time as well, will what happens in Huntsville change people’s thinking and in what way.

I had not actually heard about Hitler’s rocket program, nor was I aware that the US had scooped up a whole heap of Nazi scientists after the war and relocated them into the CIA space program. Parallels between Sofie’s and Lizzie’s lives, while not necessarily obvious to them, become more apparent as the story progresses. The author does an admirable job putting readers in a difficult position – being asked to sympathize with the fictional version of a key member of the SS and his wife.
