Couple that with some fabulous visuals, and tremendous ideas, and it's easy to see why it set the bar so high. In conversations with her trusted partner Batou, she muses on concrete definitions of "human," especially when the mind can be transplanted into artificial bodies. The triple-layered UHD100 disc sits comfortably opposite the same Region A locked, BD50 disc, and both discs are housed inside a black, eco-cutout case with a glossy slipcover. Colors are richer and more nuanced, with the HDR giving certain elements an added measure of pop and luster. Over the course of the film there are various sequences where environmental sounds, music cues and discrete objects are mixed to differing locations in the sound field, adding a head turning element to the viewing experience.

It’s no surprise then that they’re among the most accessible anime titles for new American fans of the genre. This, of course, is extremely dangerous to society at large and it’s personal for the Major; for reasons that aren’t addressed in the film, she’s received a full-body cybernetic replacement and is already grappling with questions of her own identity.

Last May, Manga Entertainment UK announced that they had obtained the licence to release the hit anime sensation Attack On Titan in the United Kingdom. Her inner struggles with being mostly machine, but with a “ghost” that has brief moments of human recollection, come full circle when she and the Puppet Master meet face to face. The almost-haunting chant of “Making of a Cyborg” in particular has become one of the most recognisable pieces of music in anime, sounding both traditional yet futuristic at the same time – a perfect fit for this film.Lionsgate’s 4K disc offers 4 audio options: English and Japanese Dolby Atmos—both new mixes—along with English Descriptive Audio and the film’s original Japanese 2. Hell, the opening 'x-ray' sequences are eye-searingly bright and, sure, the DGA 'effects' don't always hold up, but the first set piece is an absolute revelation, with the fish tanks positively glowing with intensity, and even the green ' Matrix code' credits look stunning.
