Du Plessis lays bare his growth from a youth with a questionable moral compass outside of cricket, to a leader known for his integrity, values, honesty and empathy for his teammates.

This book really takes you into the mind of Faf and his journey of growth, both as a cricketer and as a person.Both, Domingo and Gibson, invested in their relationship with du Plessis and bought into the team culture that he was trying to create. Although these are recurring themes in the book, Du Plessis’ ability to reflect honestly on his experiences stands out.

On 2 October, du Plessis scored his sixth century in the second game and became the second cricketer to score centuries in all international formats as captain, after Sri Lanka's Tillakaratne Dilshan. For the team to be accepted by 60 million South Africans as the national team, cross-cultural integration would be vitally important. Du Plessis wanted to continue playing T20s for the national side, on a contract deal, and be allowed to compete in T20 leagues outside of his national commitments. I still believe to this day, from where I'm sitting now and not playing for the Proteas, that he's the right guy for the job because he's a fantastic cricket coach.

News Corpobtained excerpts from the 38-year-old’s autobiography titled, ‘Faf: Through Fire’, which is scheduled to be released to the public on October 28. So, the relationship with AB, there’s a few stories in the book where we go through this journey together and fast-forward to him giving me my first cap as a Test player at the age of 28.

Another important team practice that Du Plessis held dear was the “no cell phone” policy for a half-hour after a game. The 38-year-old said that his life has been a closed book and he hasn't shared his journey with people outside his circle.

He describes his relationship with AB de Villiers and other players in detail as well, in a very raw and honest way. He is considered one of the greatest fielders of all time and among the best all-format batsmen of his era.
