Description

It made me realize that I have a lot of responsibility to fulfill the dreams and visions that God has given me. Jumping out of bed, Ordinary discovered something else—a long white feather resting on the sill of his window. This time I guess you could say I got both as I purchased the audiobook copy of The Dream Giver, and the author was the reader.

An almost-full moon lights up the stream, little fingers of gray light reaching down through the trees and touching the water, never reaching the bottom. The first half of the book was like a Pilgrim's Progress type fairy tale with a person named Ordinary in the Land of Familiar. This particular Giant has enslaved a village of Anybodies and while other travelers have come this way many have turned back unwilling to face the battle. They were retelling the story - they told the story in 3rd person but when the action switches into the boys dream about the shadow serpent then they continued in 1st person until the boy woke up. Author Bruce Wilkinson will share his personal "Dream Giver" experience and how the risks of leaving a fruitful past resulted in an even better future.

Also, if our clients are using a metaphor to describe their current status, they are equally equipped to resolve their issues with that metaphor or another. Another powerful reason we deny our "chance" to grow into something real, meaningful is our fear of how others will respond. The breakdown of these lessons from the story are thoroughly outlined in the second part of the book. A heavily-in-demand speaker, Wilkinson also serves as Chairman of Dream for Africa and Ovation Productions. I highly recommend this story: part one is an allegorical story and part two is a coach like walk-through. I like the fact that the first part it goes through the story, and the 2nd part breaks it down in in relevance to your life. Wilkinson gives readers practical, biblical keys to fulfilling their own dream, revealing that there's no limit to what God can accomplish when we choose to pursue the dreams He gives us for His honor.

I give him the title of coach because Champion asks questions of Ordinary and through conversation challenges Ordinary to look past his defensiveness to question what is causing this perceived bullying. There are some good truths that can be picked out of the muck, but also a lot of words and ideas that are not only false, but potentially harmful. I remember being disappointed and thinking it reminded me of the Christian hedonism principle espoused by John Piper which I don't have much time for. In a nutshell, if you are very religious, have a dream that aligns with service and people, and already have the tools and resources to get there. Through TEN training centers, pastors are being equipped to impact their churches and communities with God’s Word.

Before he could stop himself, Ordinary started talking about the Dream Giver, and about his Big Dream. After the story is the exposition (the second half of the book) where the author breaks down the revelations of Ordinary’s journey and invites the reader to take their own journey toward their “Big Dream”. The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal. It is here where the overt Christian nature of the book may confuse those who did not know about it for at the end of his time in the Sanctuary Ordinary must give up his Big Dream.

This book, Dream Giver, The is the second book by Bruce Wilkinson (born 1940) who is the author of the popular book, The Prayer of Jabez Devotional: Breaking Through to the Blessed Life (3 stars). The main reason it falls short is because the underlying principle is erroneous--it is all about living our dreams in the here and now or as Joel Osteen would say "Your best life now. Bruce Wilkinson, the author of the Prayer of Jabez, believes that each of us has a deep desire to know and fulfill our life dream.

This book was not as offensive or dangerous as the Jabez one, I just think its focus is in the wrong place and it may distract people from taking up their cross and following Jesus. Leaving one's Comfort Zone, and the stability and peace of mind that accompanies it, seems to be the most difficult course of all. This is the Dreamgiver and by cracking his dream eggs he makes sure the childrens' nights are pleasurable.
