The eclectic mix reflects the way various artists and artistic movements escaped the confines of one medium or genre.

Egon Schiele, Seated Woman with Legs Drawn Up (1917). The model for the work was the artist’s sister-in-law, Adele Harms. Collection of the Gustav Klimt, a friend and confidant of Schiele, was the key influencer on his growth. While Schiele acquired Klimt’s emphasis on erotic pictures of the feminine figure (and also shared Klimt’s unquenchable sex drive), the intensely emotional, often unnerving expression Schiele later developed, with its inquiry of his sitters’ inner lives and mental reactions, directly contradicted his master’s Art Nouveau-inspired aesthetic, with Klimt favoring a more vivid palette and glinting, patterned surface areas. Some critics, like Jane Kallir, have described Schiele’s work as monstrous, sexual, pornographic, or frightening, with a concentration on sexuality, death, and revelation. The Leopold Museum also has a remarkable number of Klimts. The exhibition includes a large room dedicated to his genius and filled with his landscapes and other paintings.Egon Schiele (German: [ˈʃiːlə](listen); 12 June 1890 – 31 October 1918) was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity and its raw sexuality, and the many self-portraits the artist produced, including naked self-portraits. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.

A small room dedicated to the Flöges, which highlights Emilie Flöge’s role as Klimt’s muse. This adds a fashion element to the collection, reinforcing the broader nature of the changes associated with Vienna 1900 Portrait of Wally Neuzil (1912) by Egon Schiele; Egon Schiele, Public domain, via Wikimedia CommonsRudolf Leopold: Egon Schiele. That’s a very deliberate part of the book. The main questions for each woman were, did he sleep with Gertrude and did he sleep with Adele, and did he love Wally and did he love Edith? a b Gayford, Martin (8 November 2014).
