While Schiele acquired Klimt’s emphasis on erotic pictures of the feminine figure (and also shared Klimt’s unquenchable sex drive), the intensely emotional, often unnerving expression Schiele later developed, with its inquiry of his sitters’ inner lives and mental reactions, directly contradicted his master’s Art Nouveau-inspired aesthetic, with Klimt favoring a more vivid palette and glinting, patterned surface areas. Some critics, like Jane Kallir, have described Schiele’s work as monstrous, sexual, pornographic, or frightening, with a concentration on sexuality, death, and revelation. The Leopold Museum also has a remarkable number of Klimts.
