I also have to wonder how he put up with educating misogynistic and willfully ignorant boys around him for so long in spite of seeing them ignore his discussions on a loop until suddenly they care at the very end of the novel. She's focused on her plan to move to New York City to become a famous author, and avoiding dealing with what happened at that party a few months ago. Both of them had a lot going on and different struggles, but their development was done really well and i found myself rooting for both of them!

While we don’t judge the book by its cover, can we just take a moment to ooh and ahhh over this fantastic cover? Will the self-proclaimed teen love doctor be able to get the girl, or is all his love talk just hot air? It’s incredibly meaningful and is a very important read for teens (especially) in what it has to say about sexual assault and consent. The beautiful descriptions and elaborate dates Prince set up definitely made me add it to my list of literary places I’d like to visit.

There’s growth and trust and stumbling and resets scattered all throughout the development of these two characters (both as individuals and as partners for one another). She undergoes a lot of healing throughout the book, and I loved the way both Prince and Dani make each other stronger and grow together.

You would think that would be an easy task for an aspiring author, but Dani had something happen to her a while back, a traumatic event, that has ended up having an lasting impact on many different facets of her life. This book is a celebration of Black love, Black teenagers, Black friendship, and the Black family, and I adored it from beginning to end. Additionally, I liked how they learned to support each other and help one another work through their difficulties. I had also hoped to link to a 2020 article from a librarian titled “It Matters if You’re Black or White: The Racism of YA Book Covers,” but sadly it does not seem to be available any longer.

What I especially enjoyed about this book is the way it balances heavier topics with more lighthearted moments. They talk about the influences Motown has had on today’s music, as well as how Black beauty practices have been appropriated. When Prince and Dani meet, sparks fly but Dani doesn't want to get distracted- so she gives Prince only three dates to convince her he's worth falling for. However, while he spends his days talking about love, Prince has yet to experience a happily ever after of his own.

Prince tries his best to convince Dani that he’s worth falling for, including genuinely trying to get to know her with the help of her parents. Prince is the primary caretaker for his mother, a strong woman fighting MS, and his younger brother. It was also really smart for LaDelle to let Dani and Prince to both be supportive of each other with their passions to increase their connection with each other. I mean at what point do you accept that some people know the difference between rift and wrong and choose wrong out of boredom or because they believe they’re an exception to responsibility?

I could feel the passion exuding out of the book and it’s always great when an author is able to get readers to actually feel the passion of their characters. And even though there are a lot of heavy-hitting topics explored, there was also a lot of fun and humor in this as well. From there, we follow the two as they get to know one another and Prince vows to win Dani's heart over just three dates. Prince Jones is passionate about music and romance, dishing out relationship advice on his Love Radio show. Also, they both had individual struggles with Dani struggling with what happened at a party on an unfortunate night and Prince having a mother suffering from MS with dad not in the picture. The technical aspects that make this novel so wonderful are the incredible character development, the realistic dialogue, and the well-developed sub-plots that tackle so many issues teens are already thinking about.
