Despite its downfalls, I still enjoyed Gotta Get Theroux This and recommend it to fans of his work, or those interested in journalism and TV. Migration (2014-11-09). Though this did a good job of introducing the reader to bunch of different ‘weird’ subcultures and groups of people – it was very superficial. The short chapters kept it moving and I understand why it’s told the way it is, but it didn’t really give any chance for the viewpoints of these people to actually be explored properly. It just felt so haphazard and the narrative was a weird one. I don’t know whether it’s because this is an old book and more recent LT instalments are better handled, but something about it just didn’t feel right. The final part of this documentary on the nation-defining frontier conflicts delves into the difficult history of the Native Police, who from 1837 killed approximately 72,000 Indigenous Australians on behalf of the white settlers. Then, in an emotional sequence in Arrernte lands, film-maker Rachel Perkins brings her own family story full circle. Ellen E Jones Live at the Apollo 9.45pm, BBC Two

V.S. Naipaul, Paul Theroux, and me: What I learned from reading about their tumultuous relationship". salon.com. 23 September 2018 . Retrieved 21 October 2018. The Stranger at the Palazzo D'Oro was a radio play directed by Lu Kemp for BBC Radio 4, 17 December 2004. Shortly afterwards, Beryl left and her place was taken by a Norwegian girl who was still with us when Paul went off on The Great Railway Bazaar journey, the beginning of his success as a writer. It was my turn to be unfaithful, and this au pair shopped me when he returned. I had confessed myself, but she added further incriminating details. Paul and I spun into a turmoil of misery yet miraculously we emerged to resume a fairly happy family life.a b c Atlas, James (April 30, 1978). "The Theroux Family Arsenal". The New York Times . Retrieved 20 October 2018. Theroux’s trademark humour and awkwardness didn't always translate to text - but once it did, the book was a lot more enjoyable. Funny anecdotes about parenting were great. The book also has gems like: In Gotta Get Theroux This, Louis takes the reader on a joyous journey through his life and unexpectedly successful career. Nervously accepting the BBC's offer of his own series, he went on to create an award-winning documentary style that has seen him immersed in worlds as diverse as racist US militias and secretive pro-wrestlers, the violent gangs of Johannesburg and extreme drinkers in London. Beryl was a good companion when my husband left on his first long absence – a term teaching at the university of Virginia. At Christmas I flew to be reunited with him. He confessed to an affair with a student, the first admitted infidelity, and I kissed him and said it didn’t matter, thinking this was true.

I think one of this book's strengths as well is the Jimmy Savile sections. Louie finds himself in the moral quandary of having had Savile as a subject and, to some ends, a friend, whilst later scrutinising his documentary for signs of what was lurking underneath. Theroux is not singular in the deception that was undertaken by Savile on him- he fooled the British public for decades, but he was perhaps closer to him than others. I think these chapters provide such an insight into the difficulty that documentary makers who 'go in' like Theroux does when the line between professionalism and personal blurs. Theroux, Paul (October 22, 2016). "Pardon the American Taliban". The New York Times. The New York Times. What advice would she give to the couple she sees in her diary? “If I were looking at Paul and myself now, as a counsellor, I would be thinking to myself, ‘There’s something going on here about roles. This chap is the one who’s fierce and angry and takes on the world. And this woman is the nice, kind, supportive wife, or at least is trying to be – but what about the part of her that wants to take on the world? And what about the part of him that’s gentle and sweet and nurturing? Are those parts getting lost?’ I might have thought, ‘I don’t think this couple are going to stay together. But I think they’ll both have quite good lives once they’ve separated.’ People who have a love of life, they’re probably going to survive, both in the marriage or outside it.” Dark Star Safari: Overland From Cairo to Cape Town". In 1994 fledgling journalist Louis Theroux was given a one-off gig on Michael Moore's TV Nation, presenting a segment on apocalyptic religious sects. Gawky, socially awkward and totally unqualified, his first reaction to this exciting opportunity was panic. But he'd always been drawn to off-beat characters, so maybe his enthusiasm would carry the day. Or, you know, maybe it wouldn't... The book is also a whistle-stop tour of world events during this period, some of which made me laugh out loud all over again (Four Seasons Landscaping anyone? 😂).
