A Question of Belief (William Heinemann, London, April 2010; Atlantic Monthly Press, New York, hardcover May 2010; There is no better literary tour guide to Venice and the surrounding landscape than Leon, and each entry provides complex, memorable characters and storylines that touch the moral center of the human spirit . . . So Shall You Reap is authentic throughout and lives up to the lofty reputation that Donna Leon has rightly earned for this series, which never fails to enlighten with each new intriguing mystery.”— Book Reporter I don't know if Leon will bring the pandemic into her next book, but here Venice is still okay, and this book has a lot less of the darkness--ecological woes and the Disneyfication of Venice--that most of her recent books have had. It has other dark themes, but not so much as to really send you reeling. As always, Brunetti is highly attuned to (and sympathetic toward) the failings of the humans around him. Leon was born in 1942 just south of New York, in the state of New Jersey. Her parents were Catholic and had strong leanings towards the Democratic Party. Her paternal grandfather was born in Latin America and her mother’s father in Germany.

While in Venice, Leon became enamored with the gondola as a form of transportation --- one which Guido Brunetti often finds himself on when traveling from the Questura to various crime scenes. It was when she was living in Venice that Leon wrote an introduction that is still posted at the local Questura for travelers who might venture there to get a look at the place their beloved fictional detective Guido Brunetti worked at. I would give anything to be able to experience that welcome letter! The modest building on the Fondamenta San Lorenzo which houses the Questura is likely to become as much a tourist attraction as the Quai des Orfèvres.” — Times Literary Supplement (London) In this slim volume, Leon discusses her passion for reading and admits that she becomes obsessed with subjects that intrigue her. For instance, she writes eloquently about bees, those fascinating and productive insects who are an essential part of our ecosystem. In addition, Ms. Leon is a devotee of the composer Handel, whose works have moved her to tears. Leon has taught English in China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Italy, and might have finished her doctorate had her dissertation not been confiscated by the Iranian government. Scenes in the Brunetti apartment with Paola (his wife) and the children, are some favorite moments. In her introduction, Ms. Leon makes it clear that she hasn’t yet hung up her pen: She is looking forward to spending time with Brunetti again and giving him the chance “to reveal more about himself, his past, and what he thinks and feels.” If only she had done the same here for herself.

Brunetti’s Cookbook, recipes by Roberta Pianaro, culinary stories by Donna Leon (Published previously in the United Kingdom as A Taste of Venice: At Table with Brunetti, William Heinemann, London, April 2010; Atlantic Monthly Press, New York, hardcover, May 2010) Brunetti paused a moment and searched his memory for any protest threatened for that weekend. Not the train drivers, not the remaining No-Vax, not the workers at Marghera – who seemed in a perpetual state of protest – and not medical professionals, who had protested two weeks before. My annual spring visit to Venice with Guido and others. There wasn’t a lot going on in Venice. The tourists haven’t returned yet. Guidi didn’t spend a lot of time in cafes. Only had one meal at home with the family. It was a much slower time there this year. The weather was cold too.

The latest Donna Leon book is titled Trace Elements, published in early 2020. Currently, there is a Donan Leon TV series adapted from her Guido Brunetti books to the German television, title Commissario Brunetti. The TV show, produced in 2000 by ARD, has also been aired in Spain and Finland. In fact, close to 20 novels have been produced as broadcast dramas by German television. One of the most popular crime series worldwide . . . While the Brunetti books, with their abundance of local color and gastronomic treats, appeal to the fans of the traditional mystery, Leon has something darker and deeper in mind.”— Life Sentence Sensitive, incredibly colourful social portraits, close-ups of a splintered, encrusted society. But finally it is probably Guido Brunetti who makes the novels so successful. The reader follows him with pleasure through the narrow, winding streets of Venice.” — Der Spiegel (Hamburg) What is unsettling is that Guido spoke to the man only the day before his death, while trying to do his father-in-law a favour. Those who know Inesh Kavinda well pronounce him a good, kind man, so Guido is puzzled to find “the books he’d seen on the shelves: they were morally at odds with the man described to him” on topics like the Tamil Tigers and the Italian terrorists of the 1980s. What prompted this? A body was found. It was a pleasant Buddhist Sri Lankan, Inesh Kavinda, who was living in the garden shed of the Palazzo Zaffo Sri Leonie. For the thirtieth time Donna Leon takes us to Venice, with its multitude of picturesque canals and grand palazzos but also its somewhat hidden criminal underbelly. This is the working patch of Commissario Guido Brunetti, a senior policeman who was brought up in this unique place and who still lives and works in the city. Regular readers will be used to the fact that these books profile the place, its ways and its people as much as any investigation Brunetti is engaged in, and in fact it sometimes takes a while to figure out precisely what crime is to be the focus of Guido’s attentions.
