How to grow potatoes in containers

Rot capping is when surface roots become so pot-bound that they form a cap of tight fibrous roots at the soil surface. Oxygen is prevented from entering into the root area below and the gasses that are given off by respiration are prevented from escaping. Another option that has been around for some time, although not often mentioned, is the air pipe or air tube. The Air Pipe The type of potato you will grow also has an impact on the end result, most gardeners prefer growing early potatoes in pots. The early type are ready to harvest by mid-summer, this means they are not affected by the late summer potato blight like other varieties. When digging the hole you shouldallow for around 30% increase in the pot size for depth and width so for example a 20 litre pot is 34cm diameter x 27cm depth - the planting hole should be around 44cm diameter x 35cm depth. The same calculation can be used if repotting into a larger pot on arrival.
