Description

The control unit is in the middle and fanning out from that are six gel pads that align with each of your abdominal muscles (visible or otherwise). To increase the effect of training, it is important to be aware of the areas you are exercising. SIXPAD Official App allows you to visualise the muscles you are exercising with your SIXPAD devices. It shows you the time you have exercised as well as how much time remains, so you always know how your session is going.

This product is noticeably different from the rest in that it’s not some kind of pad you attach to yourself. Instead, it’s a floor plate that you place your feet on, a bit like a weird-looking bathroom scale. Just as with any kind of training, your muscles may get sore. If your muscles are sore, refrain from using the product or lower the level. I had a few griefs using the SIXPAD Abs Belt, some of which could be helped by the manufacturer, some probably can't. For one, putting the cold Abs Belt on in January, when you are cold anyway, was not a fun experience. If there was a way to apply some heat to the belt before one uses it, that'd be great, but I understand that even if there was such technology available, it might compromise the otherwise excellent battery life. EMS, short for Electrical Muscle Stimulation, uses electrical impulses to create an involuntary muscle contraction and get your workout going.

Anything that can replace the need for arduous crunches and hanging leg lifts is a win in my books. But this applies only to the Abs Fit. The Body Fit is an altogether less enjoyable experience, and doesn’t blend as seamlessly into your day-to-day life as the Abs Fit. As a result, it’s more difficult to recommend – unless you’re a glutton for punishment, or plan to use it only on larger muscle groups such as your quadriceps.

Like any good fitness gear, the Sixpad has its own app. So what exactly does the app do, and does it have any practical uses? These stimulators are a good way of keeping up your muscle training on a rest day between active workouts, and for targeting muscles that are hard to tire out. SIXPAD offer stimulator pads for the arms, legs, waist and legs. Their training program is twenty-three minutes and involves four main training intervals of five minutes. You don’t have to do anything except press the Start button. The stimulator goes through the training automatically and switches itself off once it has finished. It definitely helps core strength– As much as I bang on about core strength, it’s something I definitely don’t do enough with. And this belt could help with that. I could definitely work and wear one of the ab sets and it’s only an extra 20 odd minutes. A 2018 Study did an in-depth review of EMS, in particular, they were interested in how it could prevent muscle atrophy with age. The results showed that EMS does indeed prevent sarcopenia (muscles getting weaker with age) and can also build strength and size in muscles. EMS is often prescribed in cases where patients can't use their muscles normally to prevent muscular atrophy. What’s the science say – is this a sham? When a fresh battery is used, it lasts for about 30 programs at level 8 (at a room temperature of 20°C). However, the life expectancy of the button battery varies greatly with the environment in which it is used and stored. The battery that comes with the product is for trial use. When replacing the button battery, use a fresh CR2032 lithium button battery. In all honesty, this product works fine without the app. There’s no real incentive to use the app, and as mentioned in the ‘cons’ section below, it’s not in the best shape at the time of writing either. As well as the electric Bluetooth fit tech, there are also some interesting ‘suits’ up for sale. This sounds more high tech than it is. The Sixpad system is a brilliant additional way to work pretty much every muscle group you can think of. (Albeit a limited number at a time). It doesn’t take long to use and is the perfect time saver if you use it when watching TV, reading or working. Thankfully, the SIXPAD Abs Belt doesn't need charging very often, considering once-a-day usage frequency, you will only have to charge if once a month, pretty good. The charging port is located at the bottom of the little control unit at the front of the Abs Belt, under a little plastic cover. I found this cover a bit loose and it often came undone, although I only charged the Abs Belt once, so can't say I was undoing the cover very often.

It’s not the cheapest equipment you can buy for your home gym and you can definitely do without owning one. The app too has some work. With everything in place, you turn the Sixpad on by holding the “+” button on the control unit. You then have 15 levels of intensity, which you can dial up or down using the controls. Holding the “-” button will turn the unit off if you want to finish early; otherwise, a session takes about 20 minutes. Sixpad – Electrical Muscle Stimulation If you’re already fit and into training, I think you’ll find this a good supplement to your training. The way it makes the muscles feel primes you for a workout and could be used either before your workout, or as a sort of split routine where you could do this in the morning and then weight training later in the day. The Arm Belt can be wrapped around your arms and used to work out biceps, triceps and forearms. You don’t need two of these as you can do one arm at a time and then swap, but they are also available in a twin set. You can use this gear every day if you want to. The only thing you have to be careful of is the same with any kind of exercise; muscle fatigue. Are they waterproof? The fact that I maxed out the Sixpad’s training intensity is also problematic, since your body is exceptionally good at adapting to stimulus, meaning progress eventually stalls. It has a training visualization – Where you can ‘see’ your abs being worked out, although it’s just a graphic showing a simulation of what could be happening. Now I wouldn’t attribute all the glory to the Sixpad – to do so would be folly since there are so many other variables at play when gaining strength. But I do feel it played a part when combined with my training. EMS or Electrical Muscle Stimulation uses a simple electrical current to contract muscles. The reason Sixpad uses a 20Hz pulse is that it gets you enough stimulation without leaving muscles feeling over-trained (yep, it’s powerful stuff).

On completion of a training session, you can collect an amount of MPs (muscle points) that varies according to the content of that session. Other than that, it works under the same idea, using EMS to stimulate calves, and tibia muscles all the way up to your thighs. It will also improve circulation in your feet. This all sounds really good but have there been any published studies on EMS and does it actually promote hypertrophy muscle growth? The various EMS devices available in the market are set at a variety of frequencies, but Moritani's studies focused on muscle development and discovered that effective training of the muscles is best achieved at a frequency of 20Hz. Please note that we shall bear no responsibility whatsoever for any problems that result from using anything other than genuine gel sheets.
