Everyone wanted that bastard dead, he was spreading everyone’s dirty laundry on social media, not directly giving names, but accusing them of various things in a manner that I can only describe as petty and annoying. Like, I would’ve punched him in the mouth several times if I’d ever laid my eyes on him on the school hallways. Well, I can 99% gaurentee your search has come to the end because let me present to you this bookwhich lives up to the damn hype and everything you can possibly want in a thriller. It had been a bit since I submerged myself into the Bayview student body, and it took a little bit to catch myself up on all of the names, ages, cliques and relationships. The original Bayview four are present, though mostly peripheral to the plot. Instead we get a (mostly) new set of Gen Z kids with trendy names: Maeve, Bronwyn’s younger sister who was the tech wizard behind the takedown of Simon Kelleher; Knox, her best friend and former boyfriend; and Phoebe, who is drawn into the fold based off of proximity and shared secrets. While it was nice to see familiar faces in Bronwyn, Nate, Addy and Connor, I liked that we got to follow a different group of kids this time around. The mystery wasn’t as twisty as in the first book in my opinion. I figured out who was responsible for the game fairly early on but figuring out the why and how was what kept me glued. Seeing how it all came together was fun, especially once the dares took on a deadly twist. Leave it to the kids of Bayview to turn a game into something sinister. Of course McManus threw in a lil curveball at the end that I totally didn’t see coming - bonus! Ya’ll know how much I love a fun, plot twisty but fitting surprise!! 😳 ⁣

I enjoyed the plot, lots of twists and turns. though I did guess that Phoebe’s sister was involved - pretty proud of myself for that. The random part at the end where it was actually their younger brother who reopened the revenge chat with the criminal was a little far fetched but I’ll let it lie. Depression is something I know personally and have watched family members deal with, and how this book handled it was like a stab in the gut. Is this really what the world thinks of me? Again, not saying you have to agree with my thoughts on it, but this hurt me and affected my enjoyment of the book. I just think these twists are so tired and perpetuate stigmas against LGBTQIA+ people and people with mental illness. Bronwyn, who wants to attend Yale, as her parents did, fears that her cheating will be discovered and her dreams for college will be shattered. She tells her parents. They hire an attorney and tell her not to speak with the other suspects. Bronwyn ignores this warning, as she is growing closer to Nate. It isn’t long before the police discover that the unpublished entry was edited, and Cooper’s secret relationship is brought to light. Cooper becomes ostracized in school and at home. As police and public suspicion increase, the four students begin secretly getting together to compare notes, hoping to clear their names. Cosola, Mary (22 July 2017). " One of Us Is Lying - Book Review". www.commonsensemedia.org . Retrieved 13 May 2019.Although the characters and events from book 1 are referenced and included, the storyline and new set of character is what powers this book and I was so glad for it! The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars” was somehow a fair description for the general, overall idea of this book in the beginning but then (thank god) it wasn’t entirely like that. Which I appreciate because, you know, I like sparks of differences here and there. I was thinking about this stupid game last night, and how it has everybody dancing like puppets on a string. Whoever’s behind Truth or Dare is on a massive power trip. And the thing is, we’re giving them that power. By caring. Reacting. Spending all our time worrying about who’s next and what’s true. We’re feeding the beast and I, for one, am done.” There are a couple of characters in the book that are said to be depressed and one of them was Simon, the boy who died. The final plot twist is that Simon wasn't murdered, but killed himself. Again, I think that some of Simon's feelings that surround his depression could be very relateable to teenagers, but I had three huge issues with how his suicide was portrayed. I think it’s that I just finished You by Caroline Kepnes. And that’s really just a much better book than this. Unfair standard, though.

My heart is literally beating so fast from this thrill and mystery and feels fulfilled with something heavy called satisfaction. I haven't been so content and had screamy feels over a thriller since Dangerous Girls, which was 213324 decades ago. And outsider Simon, creator of the notorious gossip app at Bayview High, won't ever talk about any of them again.Further harm is done when part of the plot includes Cooper being publicly outed against his will. This could definitely cause some anxiety for people who are closeted or have been forceably outed before. Be cautious.

This book was such a disappointment because I was REALLY enjoying it up until the last 3rd or so. I seriously thought this would be a 4 or 5 star read. However, upon finishing, I strongly believe that this book should not have been published as is. It's ignorant and damaging. One of Us Is Lying has been described on several occasions as a cross between The Breakfast Club and Pretty Little Liars. [7] [8] [2] Awards and recognition [ edit ] Goldberg, Lesley (15 August 2019). " 'Queer as Folk' Reboot, 'One of Us Is Lying' Move to NBCUniversal's Streaming Service". The Hollywood Reporter. Archived from the original on 26 April 2021 . Retrieved 26 April 2021. This is apparently a sequel but it was more like a spin-off. Yes we get little cameos of the previous characters (which I adored) but the plot revolves around a set of different characters and I feel like you can read it as a standalone. The ending: Horrible. The last quarter was so bad, and just ruined the entire book. I'm just going to pretend it never happened. When I read the HP books for the first time, I went into each one fully expecting Harry to die by the end of it (Mind you, this was when I was 12...but still, the series was CALLED Harry Potter and the ______, and I was on book 2). You, you're a murder suspect and all your secrets are gonna be exposed, have a nicE LIFE!!! Want a cookie? :)) Each chapter is told from the perspective of one of the suspects, one of the four kids left alive after detention, and each chapter ended in a revelation of incriminating facts related to that character. I felt that format really pushed the narrative along at a nice, steady pace.
