Challenge incorrectly, however, and you'll end up taking on stress tokens, which can shorten the amount of time you have to solve a case. They must answer the questions needed to solve the case which will be placed on their investigation sheet.

Detectives can challenge responses that they think are lies but at great risk: If they’re wrong, The Chisel will acquire leverage over them, making the case that much harder to solve. They are the game master whose job it is to keep the detectives from getting to the bottom of the case.

That is, even if they run out of time and the Chisel "wins," it's a good idea to let everyone keep playing until the mystery is solved—that way everyone winds up satisfied. In this variant, the detective still challenges the suspects, but an incorrect guess will result in stress. Step Four- The Detective may Challenge the suspect's response to see if they were truly given the "most useful response". Detective: City of Angels, set in the dark and violent world of 1940s Los Angeles, is a game of mystery, deception, and investigation for 1–5 players. Detective City of Angels includes separate, detailed casebooks for both the detectives and The Chisel.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Players can spend actions on their turn to gain ‘scratch’ or claim a hefty kickback from the mob if they’re at the right location. You might also be able to intuit our opinions on Detective: City of Angels and Kabuto Sumo… but that’s what the video reviews are for, really. The Chisel will win the game if all of the detectives lose, so it is in the Chisel's best interests to misdirect the detectives as cleverly as possible. Detective: City of Angels, set in the dark and violent world of 1940s Los Angeles, is a game of mystery, deception, and investigation for 1-5 players.

The reason being is the Chisel is pretty much acting like a Gamemaster and is just making sure everyone is having a good time. Step into the shoes of LAPD homicide detectives, hungry for glory and willing to do whatever it takes to close a case, even if that means intimidating suspects, concealing evidence, and hiring snitches to rat on their fellow detectives.

Since most crimes are Suspect, Weapon, and Motive, it means that a player must identify a suspect that they have knowledge of, have found and identified the murder weapon, and choose a motive found on the back of detective casebook. When Billy O’Shea insists that the victim was a regular at Topsy’s Nightclub, is he telling the truth or is The Chisel subtly leading the detectives toward a dead end that will cost them precious time?

Couple these with the unique mechanics of later missions and no two games of Detective: CoA are ever the same. The main board will be setup in the center with "scratch" (money) placed on the bottom left corner of the board, and the day marker will be placed on day 7. In the Classic mode where one player is the Chisel and everyone else is a Detective is fantastic fun.
