About this deal

Arrest a PoW anywhere in the Prisoner's Courtyard (grey) area (except inside a Tunnel, in a safe area or in a room) by moving a guard on to his circle (not necessarily the exact throw of the dice) and providing the Escape Officer holds an Equipment Card. Rolling five or less allows an Escape Officer to draw an Opportunity card (the German Security Officer draws from a deck of Security Cards). As soon as a player gains an equipment card, their pieces can be arrested by guards that land on the same space (although they initially cannot enter certain rooms), sending them to solitary confinement until, Monopoly-style, they roll a double or get a card allowing them out. Speaking of rolling grabbing those dice and chucking them across the table grants the possibility of picking up an Opportunity card for the Escape Officers or a Security Card for whoever is controlling the guards.

Escape from Colditz remains a fun and fascinating – if unforgiving – way to understand and appreciate an important real-life event. This is a game that generations of children have grown up with, and is suitable for the whole family or for gaming nights between friends. In essence very similar to the original board, the change from thick black lines to outline the walls and buildings of the castle to the 3D effect of the new depiction is one of the many small, but subtle changes.Post more Guards but only on the vacant black circles, from his reserve in the Kommandantur: as many as he wishes up to the total number of this throw. For the Germans, there’s strategy on how many guards you have out on the board, and how many you keep back in the guard room to appear on the board at key times and in important locations. An arrest is made by a guard simply moving into the same space as a POW, at which point the POW is sent to solitary. From the Red Cross Package, to the larger-than-the-rule-book Historical background book Osprey crammed in a feast of history, theme and personality. With its little colored pawns and dice it feels like a jump back in time, but the way its gameplay mechanics come together create some really fun scenarios.

Now, Osprey Games has published a new edition of the title to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the real-life breakout next year. PoWs and German Guards therefore move about the board on the circles shown in various directions according to the dice throws, rules of the game and intentions of the Escape Officers. Before you smash your computer in anger over a “roll and move” game being published in 2016 (yes, some self-anointed “expert” gamers feel this way), understand that rolling two six-sided dice for movement in Escape from Colditz is satisfying in a couple of ways. The typical larger, shallower box, easily prone to damage, has given way to a much more sturdy package. In a four player game, for instance, the German Security Officer will have 14 guards to thwart the relentless plans of 18 POW’s (six per Escape Officer). A Coloured Legend Diagram printed on the front inside cover of this booklet focuses on certain areas of the board and explains their purpose. A lovely touch is the replicas of prisoner paraphernalia: Game-play cards are enclosed within an authentic Red Cross package and you can find out more about P.

The Opportunity cards, Escape Kits, Escape Equipment and Do or Die cards are all only useful for the escapee’s, the only cards the Security Officer can use are the German Security cards. The other players are Escape Officers; each chooses one of the nationalities of POWs and places their tokens on indicated spots on the Parade Ground in the inner courtyard. This game was created by Pat Reid, a British Army Officer, and one of the few to successfully escape from Colditz Castle in World War II.The active player rolls two dice and can move any or all of their POWs, the total movement of the POWs equaling the total on the dice. Remember, this is a remastering of an old classic, so with that in mind – this is a roll and move game.
