That said, I'd rate my Sennheiser Amperiors’, Shure SEH440s’, Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pros’ (250 Ohm) and the 1More Mk801s’ bass quality above that of the 99 Classics. The quality seems good, the look and the presentation and packaging are beyond what I was expecting. We aimed for perfection in every component we designed: CNC-carved wood ear cups, cast zinc alloy hardware with electroplated coating, stamped manganese spring steel headband, memory foam and soft PU leather are the materials your hands and eyes will get to enjoy.

The pads on the cups are PU leather covering memory foam pads with a medium depth on the inside walls adjoining a small piece of soft padding covering the driver’s protective grill. Acoustic tracks such as that from Sungha Jung and Rodrigo y Gabriela sound wonderfully fun and lifelike. A bit long in the tooth, the Meze 99 Classics Gold certainly doesn’t shy away from catching eyes, but does it grab your ears, too?

Sound quality that’s anything but wooden
With a string of sensational reviews, the 99 Classics are amongst the best-sounding headphones in their class. The Meze 99 Classics are closed-back over ear headphones which deliver a crisp and clear, non distorted and balanced sound - for audio lovers. You get two Kevlar-reinforced cables with the 99 Classics, one of which has a mic and one-button remote. Overall, these two are very similar with the technicalities going the way of the VibroLabs and the musicality going to the Meze.

While the mic transmits some background noise in our office and street simulations, its performance outdoes many embedded Bluetooth mic systems. There is an included cable bag along with a 10’ cable and a 4’ cable with inline mic and a ¼” adapter and airplane adapter. All happening across a black-quiet background, that was brought into relief, when the music rose, across a broad and deep soundstage. And as the piano, then the violins and cello take over from Einar, this reviewer is stilled by the beauty and forced, simply, to listen.

They have comfortable headphones and plenty of room inside to have no contact points with medium-sized ears. Patricia Barber’s Dansons La Gigue (Verse, Premonition Records) plays and brushes across cymbals are just that, decidedly so. Compared to Hifiman Sundara is lacks definition and texture, but it’s a completely different approach to the sound, rather than being worse. In this way Meze Audio embodies a renaissance philosophy and ethic, and eye, that has, seemingly, all but passed from the world.

Great quality headphones Bought these as my old pair of gaming headphones started showing signs of failure under a year after purchase. Sturdily built, the walnut wood earcups, soft earpads, and spring steel headband give the headphones a classic look, and comfort whilst maintaining their robustness. One of my favorite tracks Árbakkinn from Olafur Arnalds’ Island Songs (Island Songs, Mercury (Universal France)) begins as Icelandic poet, Einar Georg Einarsson, recites one of his poems in his native language.Audiophile On is dedicated to bringing reviews of high-end portable audio products with an easy-to-understand format. The rest of the midrange’s spectrum is quite flat and neutral, presenting a very universal representation of the sound.
