About this deal

If your print has been damaged in transit please take photos of the damaged print or packaging and message me so I can arrange your refund. It was commissioned by the then Great Northern Railway to encourage visitors to use their service to take them on their seaside breaks to Skegness. The Skegness Is So Bracing image has been so successful it has been reused many times, and there are several versions of the Jolly Fisherman poster.

The old repairs needed removing and new ones adding in with correctly toned paper to disguise the repairs. Skegness is SO bracing - A Donald McGill parody of the famous Jolly Fisherman poster created by artist John Hassall in 1908 for the Great Northern Railway (GNR). To enable personalised advertising (like interest-based ads), we may share your data with our marketing and advertising partners using cookies and other technologies. The popularity and influence of Japanese art at the time encouraged poster artists to experiment with negative space and this restraint in composition, combined with punchy colour schemes, led to posters that made an impact from a distance and could stand out in dirty, smog-filled cities or through the smoke of railway stations. Teeming with detail and activity, the painting was eventually bought by Queen Victoria, who had fond memories of visiting Ramsgate with her mother between 1825 and 1836. Hassall’s now-famous Jolly Fisherman poster, coupled with the strapline “Skegness is SO bracing” promoted the first excursion to Scarborough from King’s Cross in London. The best examples provoked conversation, were discussed in the press and were sometimes brought to life on stage. After an eventful youth, spent variously as a student in Europe and a farmer in Canada, he became a regular contributor to The Graphic magazine.

If the file has been modified from its original state, some details may not fully reflect the modified file. It’s important to remember that we offer our prints as fun, affordable reproductions, not as fine art prints. There are different versions of the poster, however, the fisherman and the slogan are always part of the design; one such later design, promoted by the LNER, [note 1] showed the same fishermen design being tugged along the beach by a toddler hanging onto his scarf.Considering his prolific output, his works for British seaside resorts are comparatively few, although it is worth remembering that his heyday preceded the inter-war golden age of the railway poster by more than 20 years.
