About this deal

I cannot abide how he thinks violence in these situations is okay, and the way he talks about it is so blasé. She was lucky that the nuns she was placed with were kindly and loved her and taught her a skill which got her a job when discharged after several years in care . A very powerful and disturbingly truthful book written in the same style which I like to use when writing. There are multiple other characters in this book (and I am not going to give spoilers), but they are all just extraordinary.

As the story starts to unfold, and moves from one intrigue to the next, intense combat, startling outcomes, and captivating storylines, you will be hooked on the tale of Jacob Grimm. The suffering at the children's home caused by people in a postion of trust and power is disgusting.

As Kershaw describes their exploits, based on both personal documents, interviews, and official records, all of these men did not view themselves as particularly heroic, just soldiers doing their duty and fighting for their buddies in extended combat situations. When the war ended and the tally was complete, Audie Murphy exceeded Maurice Britt in numbers of multiple awards, with both men earning every combat decoration of the US Army. In Against All Odds , the renowned master of the battle narrative takes us right into the most perilous action in North Africa; Sicily, Italy; and France alongside Maurice Britt, Michael Daly, Audie Murphy, and Keith Ware, heroes all. Many of Britt's fellow invaders carried American flags, figuring the French would be less likely to fire on US troops. I can handle a little repetition about other aspects of his life, however the handsome remarks did grate on me a little.

Walter was killed in action whilst leading his men in a counter attack against German defensive positions on Monday 25 March 1918.

Murphy enjoyed a successful career through the 1950s but had drifted out of the spotlight before dying in a plane crash in 1971. He’s brought up in children’s homes with horrific experiences, so some could say that he practises all that he has ever known. Grimm of course is used as a political scapegoat, even though he did nothing wrong, due to the uproar over the situation that occurred. He uses violence so much, that it is clear he is a bully just like the people he is brought up around, and yet doesn’t recognise he is using the same behaviours that he has grown up to despise. Although most readers will never experience anything close to the level of violence and abuse Paul Connolly has seen and experienced in his life, he speaks of it all in such honest, transparent and candid terms, that all readers will, at some level, be able to relate with what they read. That is until the head of ONI needs a disposable officer to command a battered destroyer on the rim. Against All Odds is the first book in Katie Piper's UnSeen series, which shed light on untold stories of unwavering hope that deserve to be heard. In October 1911 Walter was transferred to Northampton Town Football Club, where he would go on to play over one hundred first team games, before the First World War brought a premature end to his career as a professional footballer. Overall a sad book, I was horrified to learn this sort of institutionalised abuse happened not too far from where I live and definitely an eye opener that I would recommend. Against All Odds includes the perspective of both Ellie and her mother Yvonne, making Ellie's story the perfect read for parents and carers of those with disabilities or those who, like Katie Piper OBE, are passionate about championing the most vulnerable in society. Keith Ware was the only one of the men who remained in the army, rising from World War II draftee to Major General and command of a division in Vietnam before dying in action in a helicopter crash in 1968. No lectures on the subject, no crawling under carefully aimed machine gunfire, will ever make a soldier.

There are some good twists and turns and some obvious ones which distract from others in a good way. In short, this is a well-intentioned book which, notwithstanding some interesting material, such as its photographs, is ultimately rather pedestrian. It is a true testament to just what a character Paul has managed to become though, as through all the horrors in his story he also managed to make me laugh out loud on multiple occasions. this book would be a nice addition to any library’s sports or history collection, bringing attention to a forgotten hero.
