About this deal

It's based in Trelawny, a stone’s throw from the Cockpit Country, where they have been distilling rum for 265 years.

Explore the picturesque grounds surrounding the Hampden Great House while getting lost in the history of this magnificent estate. The banana only really comes in with the taste along with the typical Hampden flavours hiding under the most pronounced burn, the burnt tyres, and an oily-ness, all moving into a long finish. Journey into the heart of a working distillery established in the 1750s, explore the picturesque grounds surrounding the Great House and sample our award winning rums - Rum Fire and Hampden Estate Gold. Also known as SINGLE RUMS, these sugarcane spirits are batched distilled in a pot still at a one single distillery. We hired Rasstar Tours and there were only 4 of us, but I had to move to the front as it's a rough road. The rich diversity of Hampden Estate’s rums comes, amongst many different factors, from the large array of marks produced by the distillery. It’s quite bright and spicy, especially compared with the older version which was more on the “rotten fruit” kind of side. Pass the remains of an old sugar factory and come to an avenue of royal palms that frame Hampden’s beautiful Great House. This punchy and vibrant overproof Rum is brimming with tropical and vegetal notes with a high ester style.

In 2009, Hampden Estate started to age its Pure Single Rums, opening a new era in the world of spirits. The oldest is a John Dore, which was installed in 1960 and can contain 2,000 gallons (7,560 litres). Candied and jellied fruit notes develop: papaya, guava, lime, Seville orange, blood orange and nectarine. Cost was comparable with one of the basic cruise tours, however this was better value as it included the lunch and was much more atmpspheric. Our welcome area where a part of the tour is conducted is accessible by wheelchair users also a designated restroom. The Vendome dates back to 1994 and can contain 5,000 gallons (18,900 litres); it is installed on a “covered veranda” and is the only still that faces the sugarcane fields surrounding the distillery. Learn about the 260 year old rum making process still in use today and taste our Pure Single Jamaican Rum. Adjoining the main building are the ageing rooms and the large “pool” where they produce the pure sugar cane vinegar which, added at the fermentation stage, gives Hampden rum its unique and unmistakable aromatic bouquet.
