About this deal

I loved following an older character as I think in the past Louise O'Neill has excelled in writing teenagers and women tackling their mid-twenties. But when the body of a young woman was found in the garden the next day, life on the island changed forever.

While it may cause others to need to check a word here and there in a dictionary it really added to the atmosphere of the book. Atmospheric and eerie, I could feel the cold and damp of that tiny Irish island while, at the same time, felt suffocated by the events and the characters. This is a tightly written, gripping and cleverly done family drama that looks closely at coercive control, domestic violence and the secrets that we keep, both from ourselves and from each other. Keelin and her husband, Henry are the prime suspects and they've been vilified by the local residents where they live. While the primary focus of After the Silence is the mystery of Nessa Crowley’s murder, O’Neill also finds time to emphasise the uneasy relations that can exist in rural Ireland between locals and “blow-ins”.

Since her explosive debut in 2014, Louise O’Neill has earned a reputation as Ireland’s sharpest chronicler of millennial angst. Chilling and atmospheric , After the Silence is sharp and perceptively written , with a mystery at its heart that will keep you gripped.

Apparently a fortune teller had predicted that her husband would only have daughters so therefore his birth proved that Keelin had been unfaithful to him. You can’t forget the way it ostracized the Kinsellas, and how, against such opposition, they would necessarily feel the need for solidarity. She was vulnerable, and scared, but I also couldn’t figure out whether she was involved in what happened to Nessa, or at least knew what had happened to her. Keelin Kinsellsa and her husband Henry live an enviable life in “the big house” on the island of Inisrún. Later, as the family gathers to watch the final documentary cut, nervously awaiting the fall-out on Twitter, Henry observes, 'It's the era we’re living in, you see.I liked the idea of the true crime documentary but I think I would have perfered if the whole book was written in interview transcript.

While both have passing similarities—depictions of emotional abuse, gaslighting, male partners treating women poorly—O’Neill looks at these issues from an entirely different angle. When morning broke Nessa Crowley's lifeless body lay in the garden, her last breath silenced by the music and the thunder. The book is set in west Cork, and her accent veers from Dublin to a really broad Midlands accent, both of which are a very long way from west Cork. It felt like a mixture of recycled thriller plotlines, which isn't necessarily a bad thing for this book.

After the Silence is set on a small island within a close knit community - This community is torn apart by the loss of one of their own on a stormy, unforgettable night. However, that captivation was mainly because it was written in a way that made me think this book might have some element of magical realism to it.After facing years of neglect and physical abuse from her father, Laura is rescued by Pam Willis, a social worker. On the day of Henry and Keelin Kinsella’s wild party at their big house a violent storm engulfed the island of Inisrún, cutting it off from the mainland.
