The descript To her, Johannes was the bratty little brother of her best friend, and as he gets older and matures, she feels (rightly) that she’s his intellectual superior, and she’s not about to give that rank up, having already had to give up so much of her life. The book explores the motivations and repercussions of Johannes’s actions, and the relationship that develops between him and Elsa.

Such a thoughtful exploration of selfishness and the idea of love, and how the two can be confused so easily, leading people to justify awful acts to themselves.The war ends about halfway through the novel and Johannes continues to hold Elsa captive, is abusive to her, and is terrible to everyone, really. I wanted to explore and tease out all the emotional and psychological elements that generate a lie, the irresistible urge to alter reality and outcome through use of words. Johannes, in particular, despite being deeply introspective, seems to understand nothing about himself or anyone else, for that matter.

There is no doubt about the fact that Ms Leunens novel is a fabulous book It makes any reader feel that. Al pasar los días nota movimientos raros hasta que descubre una joven judía escondida en una habitación secreta de su casa. I liked that the whole book hinges on a life-altering secret, one that Johannes eventually continues to enact, knowingly. The second part is reminiscent of the story The History of the Curry Sausage, a highly successful German book about a woman who has a passionate romance and hides a man and does not tell him that the war has ended.I had high hopes for this novel by that point with a strong message of togetherness and kindness on the backdrop of war, I guess the author was trying to highlight the ideology and masculine pride unfortunately was too much for Johannes. When his parents disappear, Johannes is the only person aware of Elsa’s existence and he is therefore in a position to control her destiny. Trata-se de um romance comovente e ao mesmo tempo pertubador, com alguns apontamentos de humor pelo meio.
