A nitrogen-based fertiliser is essential in spring and early summer as the nitrogen encourages lush green growth whereas one with less nitrogen but containing phosphates and potassium should be used in autumn as these nutrients help strengthen the grass roots and help the lawn make it through the winter.

Some say that the product has improved the looks of their lawns and gives them a richer color for months. We've tested several lawn treatments from big-name garden brands, including Evergreen, Miracle-Gro and Scotts, to see which will keep your garden looking its best. By law, everyone who uses pesticides professionally must have received adequate training in using pesticides safely and be skilled in the job they are carrying out. After the two weeks, check for new growth of more persistent weeds as these may require a repeated treatment.ALWAYS read the instructions on the product packaging before use and take particular note of any warnings or cautions on the label. Take care not to sprinkle granules onto hard surfaces as they contain iron, which will stain patios and concrete. Please do not cut your lawns for 2 days before or after a weed and feed application as this ensures that our weed killers work more quickly and effectively. It reduced the weed content in our plots throughout the trial, spraying twice with a six-week interval, without causing any damage to the live grass. Please note this fertiliser can scorch your grass blades, so remember to water it off or apply just before the rain is due.

This ensures your fertiliser has adequate time to take effect and complete its full process – killing off moss and weeds, and sufficiently feeding your lawn. With clover especially, the plant responds quickly to the fertiliser and it can give a quick growth spurt before the herbicide takes effect.

These responsibilities are covered by The Food and Environment Protection Act 1985 (FEPA) and Control of Pesticide Regulations 1986 (COPR). However, some say that the product is very effective if spread correctly, and that it can be easily sprinkled on the lawn. This means there is less chance of weeds and moss being able to take over as it will be harder for weeds and moss to get through thick healthy grass.For example in spring, April is the ideal fertilising month, yet many weeds including clover don't fully appear until late May, so applying a weed killer with your feed in April misses most of the weeds, adds unnecessary chemicals into the ground and is a waste of money. To treat moss in your lawn, you can use a liquid iron solution such as Ferro-Gem or Soluble Iron Sulphate. This makes it more susceptible to damage by lawn feeds and treatments, so during these conditions it’s best to pause your feeding and wait until it has rained to let the water soak in for a few days, then start feeding again. Please note for grazing animals like rabbits, it is best to allow weeds to fully die and remove them before allowing pets back on the lawn.
