About this deal

A charming, clever, and quietly moving debut novel of of endless possibilities and joyful discoveries that explores the promises we make and break, losing and finding ourselves, the objects that hold magic and meaning for our lives, and the surprising connections that bind us. Over the years they share their lives with Douglas and then Baby Jane, beloved dogs that rule the roost and eat a large amount of pastries. Hardly any plot and metaphors as far as the eye can see, and bland characters that "need to be saved" because they have some mental health issues or might have made a mistake in the past. There is an altruistic tone to the story rather than an obsessive covetous desire to amass belongings.

The chief criticism was that there were too many issues thrown into the narrative: Down syndrome, Alzheimers, violent husbands, lost partners, hauntings, and many others as well as the principal subject of lost items. Violence: Some of the short stories are quite dark and there is some implied violence lurking behind the scenes. At the end I discover that this is a debut novel (impressive), the author comes from Bedford in the U. Her characters reveal themselves gradually, much as the found objects acquire layers of meaning as we become acquainted with their provenance and history. It is also a ghost story, as the house that Laura inherits is haunted, and increasingly so as the story progresses.

Her own success is an inspiration within itself, as this authoress was older when her first book was published. Many tiny stories that go along with the lost things are also scattered at random through the main narrative. I live in a chaotic Victorian house with an assortment of rescue dogs and my long-suffering husband. This was a joy to read - I haven't enjoyed a book this much since I first read Lord of the Rings back in the 70s.Because the characters don't have to work for the information, the novel's progress doesn't feel satisfying. Registered office address: Unit 34 Vulcan House Business Centre, Vulcan Road, Leicester, Leicestershire, LE5 3EF. She loved fizzy drinks, swear words, fish fingers and Catholic churches, but most of all she loved living in Brighton in Queenie Malone's magnificent Paradise Hotel with its endearing and loving family of misfits.
