About this deal

John Keegan, Daily Telegraph “Antony Beevor’s account of this historic turning-point is truly powerful, written with a compelling narrative drive. Yet typing those words feels wholly insufficient, even a mockery, given the collective amount of suffering so many endured for so long.

From the lice infestations ( a soldier counting over 200 in his helmet; moving masses leaving a dead body to find living flesh). Revealing, profound and thoroughly unputdownable, Stalingrad is an extraordinary achievement which transcends its genre. As Beevor explains, the events on the Caucasus Front, supposedly the Führer's main priority, played a major role in his decision. He has made out of a nightmare a beautifully paced narrative, which is both a condemnation of folly and a tribute to men’s extraordinary capacity to accept it at the cost of their lives. I wanted the to read about the fate of stalingrad but this book gives so much detailes about the battle that it is hard to grasp everything. Beevor is a former officer with the 11th Hussars who served in England and Germany for five years before resigning his commission. The book ends with the defeat and surrender of the Germans in February 1943 and the beginning of the Soviet advance on Germany.

It is certainly the best narrative of the battle yet to appear and is not likely to be surpassed in our time.Laurence Rees in The Week United States “This gripping account of Germany’s notorious campaign combines sophisticated use of previously published firsthand accounts in German and Russian along with newly available Soviet archival sources and caches of letters from the front. It is vibrant and succinct, with an attention to detail which nicely fleshes out the picture, but is never overdone. Serhiy Oliyinyk, the head of the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting department on licensing and distribution-control, told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty that several paragraphs prevented the import of the books, citing a passage that purportedly said: "Ukrainian nationalists were tasked with shooting the children" so that they could "spare the feelings of SS Sonderkommando".
