Panetta and Ganucheau's graphic novel debut is as much a love story between people as it is with the act of baking. The black-and-white illustrations allow for Iago’s conniving manipulations to manifest visually as well as animating characters’ bigotry in impactful, distressing ways.The one thing that I felt Panetta and Ganucheau really hit on the head was the semi-abusive/power-play relationship between Ari and Cameron, Ari’s “friend” and bandmate. While it is a love story between Ari and Hector, it's not a coming-out story so all out the care and attention was on them and their relationship. Though he loved working there as a kid, Ari cannot fathom a life wasting away his days over rising doughs and hot ovens.

He admires Ari's parents practising the delicate art of stretching pastry dough in perfect harmony and with consummate skill.

Bloom raises the question whether gay stories — be they graphic novels or otherwise — should honor the struggles LGBTQ youth experience by starkly exposing them or by portraying life as completely normal so as to eradicate the hackneyed assumptions and biases that surround them. There are a lot of very real problems, as well, along the way, like dealing with some pretty manipulative people— exes and *ahem* bad friends -___- (just one, mayybeeee sort of two?
