About this deal

All of the characters were very three-dimensional and extremely unique, each adding something rather special to the overall storyline. Looking at other books by Fern Britton, I would imagine it's a high possibility we will get to visit Pendruggan and its residents another time. I enjoyed the setting very much, as well as the very real things that happen to the characters - it's not all sweetness and light.

I really disliked Suzie from the onset, she is such a manipulative cow, predictable in places but still addictive to read about. Fern, My Story was published in November 2008 by Michael Joseph and it ranked among the Top Ten Bestseller list by The Sunday Times. An earthquake that swallowed up every one of the very tiresome people in this book is the only thing that could have rendered it tolerable to read.

I say hard, the were written well, but if, like me, you relate to Penny and her life, you might find the reactions of those close to her hard to read as well. Greer has been in love with Jesse Behenna since her first day at school and she’s determined that one day, they’ll be married. Ella has been living with her brother Henry in Clapham, but would to anything to move away from London and back down to Cornwall.

After all, a marriage between them would join together two dynasties of Cornish fishing families to make one prosperous one. Britton may have background in journalism, which does give her a bit of a head start but nevertheless I found this book quite pleasing. At the same time, she felt this need to reconnect with her only sister and I could see why she so wanted to believe Suzie.

When she gets word of her mother’s demise it triggers a spiral in her mental health which has been fragile recently. Penny seems to be settled as the vicars' wife and mother to the gorgeous Jenna, she is also still very much involved in her job as a television producer. The new neighbours bring a little light relief, mix those with the wonderful comments from Queenie the local gossip and it’s amusing in places. Her sister, Suzie, is another pretty ghastly character which does distract a little from the main flow of the book. It seems a little mis-matched having a high-flying career woman like Penny married to Simon who in all honesty is a bit of a weed! I became quickly absorbed in this book and it has a certain laid back charm, perfect for a holiday read so you can lose yourself in the village community. There were some great characters throughout the book and this was not a twee stereotypical little village. For all ebook purchases, you will be prompted to create an account or login with your existing HarperCollins username and password. With her position at work threatened and some shocking news from her estranged family, is it finally going to be too much for her? Having said that, the book ended on a tantalising note with the promise of Ella’s story continuing in the next book and I’m certainly keen to read that. Taking a look at the listings of these books, I realised they are a series, however, it didn’t seem to matter that I hadn’t read any of the others before-definitely can be read as a standalone too. That is how good I think the writing is - when you want to throttle a particular character on one page and sweep up another into a hug on the next.
