Joining Joker in boot camp is a group of men also having a bit of trouble getting used to things and some are just downright having zero luck at adjusting. In fact, Ermey wasn’t even originally set to play the role until Kubrick saw how amazing he was in-person training the cast and crew members. Lee Ermey’s lines were the most significantly flawed of the bunch, as they often showed signs of brittleness. I remember being blown away by the first part because it was the best depiction of boot camp I'd seen on film.

A little gunfire seemed slightly distorted, but for the most part, these aspects of the track were clean and accurate, and they worked well. Shifting from the raw brutality of basic training to the dehumanising effects of combat, Full Metal Jacket deftly combines nonstop action with scathing dark humour. On the additional content front, Kubrick die-hards may be a little disappointed to hear that the material included here has all been seen on previous releases. Hartmann's performance and the recruits' reactions as convincing as possible, Matthew Modine, Vincent D'Onofrio, and the other actors playing recruits never met R. the late director's preferred policy of no black bars as his films were routinely shot "safe" for 4x3.

In the second half, as each soldier is interviewed in Vietnam, we stay with them and watch their pauses and stammering and the gradual unveiling of their thought processes; who they want to be seen as to everyone watching at home in the USA.
