They do a remarkable job at depicting the range in perspectives of queer identity and experience and writing about this, and their other experiences and identities, with grace and tact.The four sections of this book pull your emotions in different and deliberate ways, ruminating on queer Indigenous love, kinship, and loss with a lyricism that seems to leave the page and live, forever, in your gut. simpson’s work has been performed at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word (2017) in Peterborough, and in Guelph with the Vancouver Slam Poetry 2018 Team.

The way they hold the reader’s hand amidst their telling of deep trauma does a great service to the reader, while also forcing the reader to engage with the difficult reality of the ways various institutions work together to oppress Indigenous people and their intersecting identities. Decades ago, I enrolled in a course on instructional leadership that was offered at work to anyone interested in joining the agency’s roster of in-house instructors. Those things will make you grow in many ways for sure, but they won’t necessarily make you feel like you have grown, unless you consciously choose to see how much they have made you evolve.
