About this deal

Note that due to issues with music rights, the international versions of Neon Genesis Evangelion no longer include the closing title song Fly Me to the Moon, in any of its myriad variants; the credits now incorporate instrumental music from the soundtrack instead. The original twenty-six episode television series, NEON GENESIS EVANGELION, as well as the films EVANGELION:DEATH (TRUE) 2 and THE END OF EVANGELION will be available on major platforms.

Anime Limited announced plans for an Ultimate Edition the day they announced the license, and what we got is another big box full of artwork and debatable design choices. I’m coming from this as someone who put down his own coinage and bought it himself, so there’s absolutely no bias here. The first was Evangelion: Death and Rebirth which was intended to replace the final two episodes of the TV series while also recapping the events of the story, though budget issues resulted in the ‘Rebirth’ portion being incomplete. Then we have the music licensing issue with Fly Me to the Moon, the iconic ending song for the TV series. I own the original ADV dub on dvd and even that has many awkward additions to the voice-over that I don't like. It’s been tweaked a bit to try to bring it in line with the other episodes, but it’s still a step down from the quality of the rest of the series. You wouldn't know he was from there though, as there weren't Evangelion themed things about and people rarely even talked about it. In my opinion its very good due to the way it makes you reflect inwards on yourself and how you view the world. With the exception of a single episode, the entire series was mastered from the original negatives for this Blu-ray release.

We know that the rights for the use within Japan are cleared (otherwise there wouldn't be "Fly Me to the Moon" in these releases either), but we don't know if they were willing to pay "that" amount or if they only had to pay much less for the use within Japan only. The story gets completely lost in his self-explanatory symbolism, drawing from Christianity, Kabbalah and Shinto alongside other religious beliefs. It’s essentially a revised version of episodes 25 and 26 from the television series, providing an alternate finale—though perhaps it might be more accurate to refer to it as an alternate view of what happened. This quote was right from a publisher in Nov/Dec 2021 who gave a statement why "Fly Me to the Moon" is not present. After all, the various Western releases of Zeta Gundam have not included the original songs from the Japanese version, and that still works just fine as a series. It also used footage that wasn’t included in the original broadcasts, though it would later be incorporated into the Director’s Cut versions of episodes 21-24.

For fucks sake, in an interview with the director of Darling in the Franxxx, when the fanbase outside of Japan was brought up, the director said, “wait, we have fans overseas? The majority of the footage in Evangelion: Death (True)² was originally produced for the television series, so it was cropped from 1. The new English voice actors do a fantastic job, it's just jarring when you've listened to the same voices for almost 30 years. Netflix weren’t able to pay out for “Fly Me to the Moon” for the service and yet again it goes missing. As many would know by now, the Evangelion franchise was directed by Hideaki Anno, who also directed Gunbuster and Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water before the 2000s as well as a few live-action properties like Cutie Honey in 2004 and the recent ‘Shin’ films with Shin Godzilla in 2016 and the upcoming Shin Kamen Rider currently scheduled for 2023 (he’s also working on Shin Ultraman due for 2022 but not as director). In 2015, Tokyo-3 is under attack from “Angels”, extraordinary beings that possess various special abilities. The standard Blu-Ray release from All The Anime (this is one I watched) is spread over fuve discs and also includes Evangelion: Death(true)² which is a kind of gap-filler between the show and The End of Evangelion.
