About this deal

Tamasin becomes a major character in this story, as do the women she works for who report to the Queen. In this text the historical event the mystery is integrated into is Henry VIII’s Great Progress to York in 1541 and the subsequent downfall of Queen Catherine Howard. Summary: The third book in Sansom's Shardlake series looks at the royal progress to the north of England. When Tam Crawford is unexpectedly bequeathed some money, he can finally realise his dream of settling down in the beautiful village of Ellindale. Now in Sovereign, Shardlake faces the most terrifying threat in the age of Tudor England: imprisonment int he Tower of London.

And a third strand is that Shardlake befriends an old lawyer who has had a falling out with his only remaining relative, and wishes to make up with him before he dies, which his physician has told him will be soon. That is part of Shardlake’s role in York – to see that a noble prisoner is well-cared for and fit to be brought back to London for Henry’s inquisitors. Dreadnought is a coming-of-age story: it’s all about Danny coming to terms with her own power and her own agency, not just as a superhero, but as a person (and as a person who chooses to be a superhero), and it’s one that doesn’t shy away from consequences, either. What I hadn't appreciated was the organisation that went into a progress such as this – how do you feed, water and house thousands of extra people without a modern infrastructure?

Shardlake is now a much more established character, with Jack Barak as his foil and sidekick, and this is a much more assured novel (which, considering how excellent the first two books are is very impressive). Starring Justin Salinger as Shardlake and Bryan Dick as Barak, this gripping third instalment of the 'Shardlake' series is a compelling murder mystery and a deeply evocative portrait of the turbulent Tudor world. Of course, since this novel touches on the relationship between Henry VIII and Catherine Howard, Sansom had to include a way for Shardlake to meet these two, as well as confront figures like Lady Rochford, Culpepper, Dereham, and of course Sir Richard Rich. The first revised edition of the Token Publishing Ltd imprint of Michael Marsh’s The Gold Sovereign was published in 2017 to coincide with the 200th anniversary year of the famous coin.

And when Shardlake and Barak stumble upon a cache of secret papers which could threaten the Tudor throne, a chain of events unfolds that will lead to Shardlake facing the most terrifying fate of the age . And behind it all, an old enemy waits in the wings, ready to unleash a plot that will scar the world forever. The downside is that all those elements combined result in a voluminous book that became a bit boring at times. Shardlake develops a strong attention to detail when it comes to the law, as well as being a wonderful investigator. As with the other books there is a mix of fact and fiction with a significant amount of grey in between.Quelques jours pendant lesquels Matthew Shardlake se liera d'une grande amitié avec un avocat de York, plus âgé que lui, une figure parternelle pour lui, et pendant lesquels un mystérieux ennemi attentera plusieurs fois à sa vie. I personally do not agree with this theory about this particular person’s origins, but it did not take away from my enjoyment of this book. Henry VIII, accompanied by his young bride Catherine Howard, has embarked on a Great Progress from London to York, to establish his power and authority with his rebellious subjects in the North and receive their oaths of loyalty. Il est passionnant de suivre l'évolution des convictions et des sentiments des deux héros et enfin de découvrir de nouveaux personnages que nous retrouverons d'ailleurs ensuite dans les deux opus suivants, "Revelation" et "Heartsone". These seven books make for a fabulous series, but Sansom has mentioned that he does wish for the series to go through the reign of Elizabeth I, which I would love.
