About this deal

Emily Morris uses 9/11 to fake her own death and run away to start a new life in California as Connie Prynne. Fourteen years later, now with a teenage daughter by her side, Connie is diagnosed with breast cancer. She will be forced to confront her past so that her daughter will not be left on her own if she does not survive. She must decide how to explain her lies, her secrets, her selfish decisions – and ultimately her ‘widowed’ husband. Everything she thought she had fled from when she pretended to die in New York. The BBC has revealed details for a new drama, People Who Knew Me, coming to BBC Sounds on May 23, then Radio 4 on from June 26. It tells the story of Emily Morris, voiced by Rosamund Pike, who uses 9/11 to fake her own death and run away to start a new life in California as Connie Prynne. The first audio drama from the makers of Bad Sisters, People Who Knew Me is a 10-part series, written and directed by Daniella Isaacs, adapted from the book by Kim Hooper. A celebration of Connie’s life will be held on April 12 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Ann Church, 271 Hampton St. Immediately followed by a reception at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. The sweetest thing I remember about Auntie Connie is that she was just so much fun. Like FUN FUN FUN! As a kid I loved to hop into her station wagon and get a big kiss from her. Her laugh was amazing and you knew when you were around her you were in for a good time! To my larger-than-life cousins Greg, Grant, Ronnie & Vince —you are in my thoughts and you all carry your mom’s fun loving super awesome spirit. Love, Tiff ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Sharon Horgan (Executive Producer at Merman) says: “It has been so great to bring Kim Hooper’s emotionally and morally complex novel to life via a drama podcast. Daniella’s adaptation and direction, along with a brilliant cast led by Rosamund and Hugh, bring you right into the mind of Connie and her battle with truth and lies. This is a series that will challenge your prejudices and invite you to ask, what would you do if you had the opportunity to run away?”Do you see Emily’s decision to flee New York after 9/11 as impulsive? Or does it just become the unexpected final part of an escape she’s been contemplating for some time? Episode 1 will be available on first BBC Sounds on 23 May, with episode 2 dropping on the 25 May. New episodes will drop twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the entire series will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 from Monday 26 June.

Unfortunately, that piece wasn’t a big part of the novel. In fact, if I were to criticize author Kim Hooper, it would be in the way she glossed over how Emily was able to get a job, get paid, get insurance, etc. WHEN: Episode 1 of “People Who Knew Me” will premiere on May 23, new episodes will drop twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Connie spent the entirety of her life in Winnipeg, where she worked at Safeway Grocery Store and at the Bank of Nova Scotia Data Centre. After retirement, she enjoyed travelling, and she spent many beautiful years touring the United States with her husband Ron in their motorhome (the big toe). In more recent years, she returned to her childhood parish, St. Ann’s Parish, where she was an involved member and deeply committed to her faith.

Resolved to tell her husband of the affair and to leave him for the father of her child, Emily’s plans are thwarted when the world is suddenly split open on 9/11. It’s amid terrible tragedy that she finds her freedom, as she leaves New York City to start a new life. It’s not easy, but Emily---now Connie Prynne —forges a new happily-ever-after in California. But when a life-threatening diagnosis upends her life, she is forced to rethink her life for the good of her thirteen-year-old daughter. Connie's character makes me sad. Connie has spent the last 14 years raising and protecting Claire from her past, only inviting few people into her life so that she does not make connections she may have to break again one day, and doesn't want to disappoint more people. Connie just wants to be the best mother possible; give Claire everything she never had and more. People Who Knew Me was commissioned by Dylan Haskins, Commissioning Editor (Podcasts) for BBC Radio 5 Live & BBC Sounds Fourteen years later, Connie Prynne is diagnosed with breast cancer. Now, with her thirteen-year-old daughter Claire by her side, voiced by Isabella Sermon, Connie must confront her past so that her daughter will not be alone if she does not survive.
