A. We believe that a specialist Worktop Oil is the best oil for kitchen worktops. This is because it not only enhances the natural beauty of the timber, but it will also protect the wood from stains and spills. It is excellent for use around kitchen sinks and areas that get wet often. Here is a close-up, before and after of Danish Oil on Oak. You can see the oil slightly darkens the wood, enhancing the natural characteristics of the oak. With three coats of Danish Oil, all wooden surfaces should have a lovely, natural satin sheen and water should bead up on the surface. These signs indicate the wood has been properly treated. Step 1: Clean the Worktop. Use our Wood Cleaner, undiluted, by applying with a clean cloth and rubbing into the wood. Wipe off any excess cleaner with a clean, dry cloth and leave to dry. A. Protect against spills. A worktop oil should give a water-resistant seal and a stain resistant finish. This finish is particularly important around sinks where the wood will often get wet. It should repel common household stains - such as juice, tea, coffee, and wine - making it easy to clean and maintain your kitchen worktops. Denibbing pads may be used wet or dry for cleaning/removal of impurities, oxides and dirt. The three dimensional structure of the pads is easy to use on contoured surfaces and profiles, as well as areas which are difficult to reach. Mirka Mirlon pads are recomended when decorating for the removal of raised grain on timber after an initial coating has been applied, and recommended for denibbing between subsequent coats. Before applying the Danish Oil, it is important to properly clean the wood and remove any old finishes. This will ensure the oil is fully absorbed, creating an even and an attractive, natural, satin finish.

Leave the oil to penetrate for two to three minutes and wipe away any excess oil with a Lint Free Cloth. Using a Lint Free Cloth will not spoil the application of the oil by leaving any unwanted loose fibres, threads and lint on the surface.

Many solid wood worktop manufacturers do not recommend the use of multi-purpose cleaning products that contain chemicals which may damage worktops. Our Wood Cleaner has been specifically designed to deep clean all wooden surfaces and to remove heavy soiling and stubborn stains, but can also be diluted to be used as an everyday worktop cleaner to gently cleanse without causing damage. When diluted, the cleaner makes 2.5 Litres of cleaner for your worktops. Worktop Oil Extra pressure may be applied when cleaning unfinished wood as the wood will have absorbed the dirt and will require more cleaning. Work the oil over the entire surface of the worktop and all edges so that there is a thin, even covering.

As our Danish Oil is completely non-toxic and food safe when dry, it can be used on any wood and in any environment, such as: Like with any wood restoration task, the more effort you put into the preparation, the better the result. In this case, it is sanding and cleaning the wood. Sanding removes the old finish, and cleaning helps removing any staining from the wood and also removes any dirt that would effect the finish. There are many different recommended treatments for wooden worktops, but we would always recommend a specialist oil – such as our Worktop Oil – as this has been designed to fit the specific purpose compared to other standard oils and varnishes. What Do You Want a Kitchen Worktop Oil to Do?For new worktops, a worktop oil should be used as soon as the worktops are installed. If you are unsure of the finish, test it on a piece of spare wood or an unseen area first. Two more coats should be applied after the first, leaving four to six hours between each coat to ensure the previous application has completely dried before applying the next. Step 3 – De-nibbing between coats Denibbing is a really important step in applying any finish, it helps either the adhesion or absorption of further coats and can make a real difference to your projects. Denibbing Video Transcript The De-nibbing Pad can be used to gently sand the surface between coats of the oil when dry. This will ensure a smooth, flaw-free finish. Make sure to gently rub in the direction of the grain and remove any dust with a damp cloth before the next coat of oil. Restore and oil wooden worktops It provides excellent water resistance (including bare wood), helping to reduce staining and making the wood easier to clean and maintain.

If the wood is heavily scratched or has a very tough finish then you can use coarser grades of paper first. But the key is to then work your way up through the grades to create the ideal finish. So if you needed to use p120 to sand out some scratches, you’d then use p240 to make it smoother, and then the fine pad (p320) to finish it off. To re-oil the wood, sand the surface using the fine pad and apply oil in the same way as above. CleaningWhen water no longer beads on the surface but lies flat on the wood, it is time to reapply the Worktop Oil. Likewise, if the sheen of the worktop is starting to dull. We recommend reapplying the Worktop Oil at least once a year, or as necessary for high use areas. A Foam Brush absorbs the product and allows you to distribute the oil liberally and evenly on to the surface of the wood. There are also multiple sizes available, so that you can apply oil to all those hard-to-reach areas on any wooden item. Once the wood has been completely prepared, you have the option to stain it. Stains are not included in this kit, but if you wanted to change, or adjust the colour of the wood, now is the time to do it using our Wood Stain. Step 2 – Applying the Oil The cordless Perfect-it™ Denibbing Tool uses Trizact™ abrasive stems for consistent, pinpoint sanding of dirt nibs and very small repair areas. Unlike conventional abrasives, 3M™ Trizact™ products start sharp and stay sharp, resulting in more predictable finishes and improved, consistent quality. Trizact™ products last longer than conventional abrasives and provide precise finish control such that operators can reduce grade sequences, requiring fewer process steps and fewer abrasive products. Three-dimensional structures uniformly distributed over the entire abrasive surface enable consistent performance without product-to-product variation.
