The parking situation at Old Rag will probably be a rapidly changing situation but based on what I heard, you should not assume there will be the option of paying to park in the pasture next to the NPS lot this Fall. Old Rag is Shenandoah National Park’s most popular (and arguably, the best) day hike, but it’s not found along Skyline Drive like most other hikes in the park. It’s found in Robertson, located at the park’s eastern boundary. See below for more info on how to get to the trailhead. Fun side note: why is it called Old Rag? If you haven’t hiked Old Rag in some time, it’s worth noting that there is a relatively new parking situation. Instead of just one lot, there are three parking lots. The Old Rag hike at Shenandoah National Park makes many lists, including Outside Online, which ranked the hike among the 25 best hikes inthe world. A short 20-minute drive from the Old Rag Trailhead, Graves Mountain Farm & Lodges in Syria is a nice full-service option. In recent years, on busy Fall weekends, it has not been unusual for several hundred cars to park in the paid overflow pasture.
