Yakuza Moon YAKUZA MOON MEMOIRS OF A GANGSTER’S DAUGHTER SHOKO TENDO Translated by Louise Heal KODANSHA INTERNATIONAL Tokyo • New York • London 3 Edited By Scatkevin The yakuza do not consist of just one group, rather there are many different syndicate groups that together form one of the largest organized crime groups in the world. [26] In 2001, the FBI's representative in Tokyo arranged for Tadamasa Goto, the head of the group Goto-gumi, to receive a liver transplant at the UCLA Medical Center in the United States, in return for information of Yamaguchi-gumi operations in the US. This was done without prior consultation of the NPA. The journalist who uncovered the deal received threats from Goto and was given police protection in the US and in Japan. Martin, Alexander (30 November 1999). "5 Things to Know About Japan's Yakuza". The Wall Street Journal . Retrieved 19 April 2022. I’m expecting that many fields and many interests will be represented in the class, and this brings up an At their height, the yakuza maintained a large presence in the Japanese media, and they also operated internationally. In 1963, the number of yakuza members and quasi-members reached a peak of 184,100. [7] However, this number has drastically dropped, a decline attributed to changing market opportunities and several legal and social developments in Japan which discourage the growth of yakuza membership. [8] In 1991 it had 63,800 members and 27,200 quasi-members, but by 2022 it had only 11,400 members and 11,000 quasi-members. [2] The yakuza are aging because young people do not readily join, and their average age at the end of 2022 was 54.2 years: 5.4% in their 20s, 12.9% in their 30s, 26.3% in their 40s, 30.8% in their 50s, 12.5% in their 60s, and 11.6% in their 70s or older, with more than half of the members in their 50s or older. Yakuza: Expanded Edition University of California Press ( ISBN 0-520-21562-1) The yakuza are known for their strict codes of conduct, their organized fiefdom nature, and several unconventional ritual practices such as yubitsume, or amputation of the left little finger. [4] Members are often portrayed as males with heavily tattooed bodies and wearing fundoshi, sometimes with a kimono or, in more recent years, a Western-style "sharp" suit covering them. [5] This group is still regarded as being among "the most sophisticated and wealthiest criminal organizations". Primarily Japan, particularly, Kantō/ Tokyo, Kansai, and Chūbu; also internationally in, South Korea, Australia, [1] and the Western United States ( Hawaii and California)

The yakuza still regularly engage in an array of criminal activities, and many Japanese citizens remain fearful of the threat these individuals pose to their safety. [10] There remains no strict prohibition on yakuza membership in Japan today, although many pieces of legislation have been passed by the Japanese Government aimed at impeding revenue and increasing liability for criminal activities. [10] Etymology [ edit ] I read this book as part of a group assignment for my English class. I chose to read this book because it looked like it would be an interesting read, and it was. I had a hard time putting it down once I started. The book is about the life of a Japanese Mobster's daughter and the life she lived in her teens and early adulthood. But, though much has been written about the male members of the yakuza fraternity - the drink, the money, the women and the violence - much less is known about their wives, daughters and lovers. Tendo has been all three. Yakuza ( Japanese: ヤクザ, IPA: [jaꜜkɯza]; English: / j ə ˈ k uː z ə, ˈ j æ k uː z ə/), also known as gokudō ( 極道, "the extreme path", IPA: [gokɯꜜdoː]), are members of transnational organized crime syndicates originating in Japan. The Japanese police and media, by request of the police, call them bōryokudan ( 暴力団, "violent groups", IPA: [boːɾʲokɯꜜdaɴ]), while the yakuza call themselves ninkyō dantai ( 任侠団体, " chivalrous organizations", IPA: [ɲiŋkʲoː dantai]). The English equivalent for the term yakuza is gangster, meaning an individual involved in a Mafia-like criminal organization. [3] Under the Organized Crime Countermeasures Law, the Prefectural Public Safety Commissions have registered 24 syndicates as the designated boryokudan groups. Fukuoka Prefecture has the largest number of designated boryokudan groups among all of the prefectures, at 5; the Kudo-kai, the Taishu-kai, the Fukuhaku-kai, the Dojin-kai, and the Namikawa-kai. [33] After the Organized Crime Countermeasures Law was enacted, many yakuza syndicates made efforts to restructure to appear more professional and legitimate. When we met she was furiously trying to meet the final deadline for her second book, which she said would be a more light-hearted look at life as a single mother. She was reluctant to talk about the father of her 18-month-old daughter, saying only that he was a photographer with whom she remained on friendly terms. Yakuza Moon homeroom teacher. Seeing as I hadn’t set foot in school since moving up to ninth grade, it wasn’t surprising we’d never met. Yet she’d bothered to come visit and brought me a gift. ‚Tendo-san, please stop making such trouble. You should try to turn over a new leaf.‛ Her voice trembled slightly when she spoke. ‚Yeah . . . well, uh, thanks for the Coke.‛ And that was the end of my conversation with the only person who ever came to visit me. Later that day, one of the guards handed me a book. It was a collection of poems, including traditional haiku and tanka poetry, written by inmates from all the girls’ correctional facilities in the country. The authors were identified by their initials. One girl had been awarded the top prize in all three categories: freestyle poetry, haiku, and tanka. This previously-unheard-of triple-crown win had gone to none other than my own sister, Maki. On the proud bloom of our youth Please bestow sanctuary and light Like a warm and gentle breeze That travels over fields of green And the clear blue ocean 45 Edited By Scatkevin

Yakuza Moon are growing up together. And the joys of being a mother far outweigh the hard times. My daughter has reminded me of my own childhood, and that even when my family fell on hard times, there were good times too. Family. It’s taken me a long time to appreciate this, but now I know that family is the place where I’ve always been happiest. And now that I have a daughter—a family of my own—that makes me happier than anything in the world. Shoko Tendo Tokyo, 2008 12 Edited By Scatkevin I read an article about the author of this book, with a photo shoot of her tattoos and short description of the book as a candid and open look of being apart of a Yakuza family. I was very much intrigued, but the book really isn't "memoirs of a gangster's daughter" and has very little to do with the Yakuza at all. The book is an autobiography about a troubled childhood with a wild father, which then leads to a rebellious adolescence and then a string of doomed relationships, interspersed with the author's regret and apologies to her family. Although her father and some of her boyfriends have been Yakuza members, there's no insight to how her life has been affected by the Yakuza organization. The book reads like she had a deadbeat dad who she then dates cabon copies of. There is very little to do with understanding the Yakuza organization or the organization's involvement in her life. Origins [ edit ] A yakuza with a dragon tattoo is running to help his comrade, who is fighting against the police. Yakuza boss Shimizu Jirocho (Chogoro Yamamoto) Yakuza Moon The whole thing was really embarrassing, but somehow I felt relieved that I had apologized. But by the time I reached ninth grade, I was still running away from home and had stopped going to school altogether. I used to have fun hanging out with Yoshimi and her gang. We were heavily into sleeping pills, which we would crush between our teeth and then wash down with soda because we thought this would make them work faster. Then we’d fight off sleep by sniffing thinner, and enjoy the buzz it gave us. Once, Yoshimi and I happened to wake up at the same time. The TV had been left on and a news program was just starting. We turned and stared at each other in amazement, then rushed to the mailbox to get the newspaper. ‚Shoko, this is bad. Looks like we’ve been asleep for three days.‛ ‚Like a pair of real-life Rip van Winkles.‛ We burst out laughing. So most of the time we did dumb stuff like this and laughed about it. But once, after I’d taken a huge dose of the sleeping drug Benzalin, I was so spaced out that when one of the guys in the gang—someone I didn’t like much—climbed on top of me, there was nothing I could do to stop him having sex with me. When I woke up the next day with my head on 38 Edited By Scatkevin
