About this deal

Multi-disciplinary teams are located on every ward, working with patients to promote their rehabilitation and recovery: He was working in a shop at the time, and spoke to his manager after the event, who helped him on his path into nursing. I witnessed a bloke that died in front of me and I felt I could've done more to help him," Paul recounted. Susan Mathew, Women in the Greetings of Rom 16:1–16: A Study of Mutuality and Women’s Ministry in the Letter to the Romans (Durham University: Durham E-Theses, 2010), 110.

Paul is the only person in the New Testament to refer to ministers as diakonoi. It’s his word and he was consistent with how he used the word. Paul used it for people who were agents with some kind of sacred commission. As such, several diakonoi are described as being a diakonos of Christ (1 Tim. 4:6), or of God (e.g. 2 Cor. 6:4), or of the gospel (Eph. 3:7), or of a specific church—a church being a sacred community (Rom. 16:1).Wilson, Andy (27 August 2011). In classical Greek the word prostates (προστάτης) (feminine, prostatis) was used to mean either a chief or leader, or a guardian or protector, often in a religious context; it was later used also to translate the Roman concept of a patron. [21] The Apostle Paul's use indicates that its range of meanings had not changed by New Testament times. This suggests that Phoebe was a woman of means, who, among other things, contributed financial support to Paul's apostolate, [16] and probably hosted the house church of Cenchreae in her home, as well as, providing shelter and hospitality to Paul when in the town. [17] Veneration [ edit ] Phoebe, likewise, acted as Paul’s emissary, his representative to churches he did not found but eagerly sought to visit (Romans 1:10). Phoebe introduced Paul to the Romans via his letter. She conveyed current news and individual greetings, thereby setting the stage for what Paul hoped to be his successful visit to Rome.

The name Phoebe means "pure", "radiant", or "bright"; and was the name of a Titan in Greek mythology. [11] RMA -The Royal Marines Charity Chair, Lynn Fordham, said: “The Board and Trustees are thrilled to be welcoming Ben to the role of CEO. He brings with him a wealth of experience gained as a serving Royal Marine and more recently in the commercial world. This combination of skills and experience will ensure the successful delivery of the Charity’s future strategy”. Challenge Cup: Lima inspires Wigan win". rleague.com. 28 August 2011. Phoebe (Feben [1] , Phebe [2] ) [ Koine Greek: Φοίβη; [3] Latin: Phœbē, [4] Church Slavonic: Фива (Fiva), [5] [6] Armenian: Փիբէին (P̕ibēin) [7]] was a first-century Christian woman mentioned by the Apostle Paul in his Epistle to the Romans, verses 16:1–2. A notable woman in the church of Cenchreae, she was trusted by Paul to deliver his letter to the Romans. [8] Paul refers to her both as a "servant" or " deacon" (Greek diakonos) and as a helper or patron of many (Greek prostatis). This is the only place in the New Testament where a woman is specifically referred to with these two distinctions. Paul introduces Phoebe as his emissary to the church in Rome and, because they are not acquainted with her, Paul provides them with her credentials.

Gynē Diakonos (woman deacon) In some instances, the word gynē (“woman”) was combined with diakonos to specify a woman deacon. For example, Clement of Alexandria writes, “We also know the directions ‘about women deacons’ ( peri diakonōn gunaikōn) which are given by the noble Paul in his second letter to Timothy.” Stromata 3.6.53. (Clement was referring to 1 Timothy 3:11 but mistakenly mentions second Timothy.) Clement understood that Paul was referring to women deacons “from the context of the passage. Many exegetes have interpreted the passage in exactly this same way.” Aimé Georges Martimort, Deaconesses: An Historical Study (San Francisco: Ignatius Press, 1986) Originally in French: Les Diaconesses: Essai Historique (Rome: C.L.V. Edizioni Liturgiche, 1982), 77. Tabitha and Phoebe, and other women like them, were among the first pastoral workers, or social workers, in the church as they provided materially for others and served those who needed assistance, whether widows or apostles. Helping others materially may well have been one role of diakonoi (i.e. deacons) in the apostolic church. Phoebe, however, was involved in more ministries than just providing for others. We will look at some of these other ministry roles in parts 3 and 5, but next I want to look at evidence that shows Phoebe was regarded as an official deacon. Beverly Roberts Gaventa, “Romans,” in C.A. Newsome & S.H. Ringe (eds), The Women’s Bible Commentary (Louisville: Westminster John Knox Press, 1992), pp. 313–320.Wigan wins Super League". The Courier-Mail. Australian Associated Press. 3 October 2010 . Retrieved 21 November 2019. Paul presents Phoebe as a patron, wealthy and respected, who uses her influence to help him and other Christians (Gaventa 1992:320). Quite possibly, Phoebe had agreed to finance Paul’s dream of going to Spain and evangelizing the outer realms of the Roman Empire (Romans 15:24, 28).

In 2007 Paul became the Bradford Bulls captain taking over from Iestyn Harris. In August 2007 he was named in Bradford Bull' Team of the Century. In September 2007 Deacon reached 2,000 goals for the Bradford Bulls. Deacon was recalled for the Great Britain train-on squad for the 2007 test series with New Zealand, but pulled out due to injury. In 2008 Deacon celebrated his testimonial year with the Bradford Bulls after 10-years of service for the Super League club. As well as a testimonial match against his hometown club Wigan Warriors in January, Paul Deacon's name also appeared on all away jerseys to commemorate his loyalty to the Bradford Bulls. On 16 April 2008 Paul signed a new 2-year contract until 2010. He was forced to rule himself out of contention for the England training squad for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup through injury. [6] In November 2009, Deacon signed for Wigan after 11-years at the Bradford Bulls. The verb diakoneō is used in relation to Paul himself (Rom. 15:25; 2 Cor. 3:3; 8:19–20) and Onesimus (Phlm. 13). In Rom 15:25, Paul expresses that he is going to minister to the saints ( diakonōn tois hagiois), which is important to our discussion because Phoebe’s ministry is also in relation to the saints in Cenchreae. He uses the abstract noun diakonia in a range of contexts and in relation to a variety of individuals. It includes himself (Rom. 11:13; 15:31; 2 Cor. 4:1; 5:18; 6:3; 2 Cor. 11:8); Stephanas and his household (1 Cor 16:15); Archippus (Col 4:17); Roman Christians (Rom. 12:7); Corinthian Christians (1 Cor. 12:5); Christians in general (Eph. 4:12); the ministry of death and condemnation (2 Cor. 3:7, 9); the ministry of the Spirit (2 Cor. 3:8); and the relief aid in the form of the collection (2 Cor. 8:4; 9:1, 12–13).Phoebe and Paul served as mutual ambassadors and reciprocal patrons. Paul introduced her as a woman of high standing, setting the stage for her to have a successful visit. He asked Roman believers to aid her in her visit, perhaps in a business way. Macy, Gary.
