Increased demand since the 1980s, principally from China, for both A. villosum and A. tsao-ko, has been met by farmers living at higher altitudes in localized areas of China, Laos, and Vietnam, people typically isolated from many other markets. [21] [22] [23] History [ edit ] Chinese drawing and description of cardamom from the Bencao Pinhui Jingyao (1505), by imperial physician Liu Wentai In Korea, Tavoy cardamom ( Wurfbainia villosa var. xanthioides) and red cardamom ( Lanxangia tsao-ko) are used in tea called jeho-tang. https://ac.els-cdn.com/S0378874108002195/1-s2.0-S0378874108002195-main.pdf?_tid=a05bf130-58a9-4125-bcf2-c338c2fb9c0a&acdnat=1548899893_9c957417195b56688a5489752441bde4 Test-tube research also suggests that cardamom may protect against Helicobacter pylori, a bacteria linked to the development of most stomach ulcer issues ( 18).

A similar study in rats found that cardamom extract alone could completely prevent or reduce the size of gastric ulcers by at least 50%. Antioxidants, found in abundance in cardamom, protect cells from damage and stop inflammation from occurring ( 13). When grinding your own, it is best to use a mortar and pestle rather than an electric spice grinder if the only spice you are grinding is cardamom. The reason is that you will usually only need to grind a few cardamom seeds. In a typical spice grinder, the blades will not get any traction, so the seeds will just spin around in the grinder instead of being ground to powder. If you are grinding other whole spices along with the cardamom, you may get better results. Do use ground cardamom if you rarely use the spice and don’t need much of it. According to a 2017 research, cardamom may even improve inflammation and oxidative stress in hyperlipidemic obese pre‐diabetic women. Native to India, cardamom has long been sought after across the globe. In ancient Egypt, its seeds served as an early form of toothpaste and mouthwash. It also made its way to the great civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome, where it was primarily used as a perfume.

What is Cardamom?

When properly stored, cardamom pods will be usable for more than a year. However, seeds that have been removed from their pods will start losing their flavor once they are exposed to air. In other words, you should buy pods if you are going to store the spice for an extended period. Ground seeds should be used immediately as the flavor will start fading rapidly after grinding, which means that you should only grind seeds that you intend to use right away. Can cardamom seeds be used as a substitute for the pods or vice versa? However, there is currently no recommended dose for the spice since most studies have been on animals. The use of supplements should be monitored by a health professional.

Even though the results are promising, these studies have only been conducted on mice or in test tubes. Human research is needed before stronger claims can be made. Cardamom is a delightfully aromatic spice, so much so that you may be deceived into thinking that more of it will automatically be better. Too much fresh cardamom will overwhelm other spices and may even leave your dish tasting bitter. You may also find yourself using too much if the spice is not so fresh; using more can seem like a good way to compensate for the loss of flavor. This can be a problem as well since it may give the food a chalky texture. Must-read related posts Additional research shows that cardamom extract can reduce the number of bacteria in saliva samples by 54% ( 21). Once the seedlings have emerged you can spritz with warm water to recreate the humid conditions of its native environment of Southern India. Keep the soil moist at all times. A good mulch or green manure prior to growing will really help with this process.

What is Cardamom Used for?

In the seeds of round cardamom from Java ( Wurfbainia compacta), the content of essential oil is lower (2 to 4%), and the oil contains mainly 1,8-cineol (up to 70%) plus β-pinene (16%); furthermore, α-pinene, α-terpineol and humulene are found. [17] World production [ edit ] Top ten producers of cardamom – 2017 Existing studies on the antibacterial effects of cardamom have only looked at isolated strains of bacteria in labs. Therefore, the evidence is currently not strong enough to make claims that the spice would have the same effect in humans. One study found that cardamom extracts were effective in fighting five bacteria that can cause dental cavities. In some test-tube cases, the extracts prevented the growth of the bacteria by up to 0.82 inches (2.08 cm) ( 20). In the 19th century, Bombay and Madras were among the principal distributing ports of cardamom. India's exports to foreign countries increased during the early 20th century, particularly to the United Kingdom, followed by Arabia, Aden, Germany, Turkey, Japan, Persia and Egypt. However, some 95% of cardamom produced in India is for domestic purposes, [43] [29] and India is itself by far the most important consuming country for cardamoms in the world. [44] India also imports cardamom from Sri Lanka. In 1903–1904, these imports came to 122,076kg (269,132lb), valued at Rs. 1,98,710. In contrast, Guatemala's local consumption is negligible, which supports the exportation of most of the cardamom that is produced. [45] In the mid-1800s, Ceylon's cardamom was chiefly imported by Canada. [46] After saffron and vanilla, cardamom is currently the third most expensive spice, [41] and is used as a spice and flavouring for food and liqueurs and in medicine. [32] Gallery [ edit ]

The two types of cardamom, καρδάμωμον and ἄμωμον, were distinguished in the fourth century BCE by Theophrastus. He reports that some people believed they came from Media, others from India. The extracts were able to inhibit the growth of some strains by 0.39–0.59 inches (0.99–1.49 cm) ( 26). However, harvesting of seeds and pods will be possible in the second year of growth. Peak harvest for pods is between October – November. Even more important is that it will take between 5-10 years for the plants to reach full maturity and the eventual height of around 2 meters or 10 foot roughly.
