About this deal

On the bright side, Nicola doesn’t really socialise with the others all that much, and hopefully won’t share her (totally correct) theory with anyone else.

Tara was usually very calm and patient but that morning she was pretty angry with me. I think it was a combination of what I had said, added to the inconvenience of having to get her shoes repaired during her lunchbreak, and annoyance at her shoes being damaged in the first place. Tara scraped up the last bits of salad with her fork and slid them into her mouth. Then she put the straw to her lips and watched me drying her boot’s sole while she finished off her apple juice. Jenny looked confused for a moment, then said “You’re not on probation! I thought I’d made it clear.... There is an expectation that all staff will adhere to a certain level of behaviour. If you ever return to your old ways, be it today, tomorrow, next week, or next year, your employment will be terminated.” I rubbed the toe of her boot with my handkerchief. Then I dried the top of her foot, and the sides of her boot, followed by drying around her heel. When I dried the leg of her boot, I once again had the sole of Tara’s boot lightly pressed against my chest. Since this morning, I keep thinking about whether I might be able to convince Tara to step on me, or get me to massage her feet, and various other ideas... just to antagonize Helen of course!

I looked up at Tara and thought: “I wish!!”. I had finished cleaning the sole of her boot, but I kept wiping anyway. I was scared to say anything. I knelt on the floor in front of Tara. She lifted up her left foot and moved it toward me. I grabbed her foot with my left hand and began wiping her boot clean. Tara watched me, then opened her apple juice and put a straw in the bottle. Tara smiled and said “Oh! Yes, that would be nice. Thank you.” (Tara was wearing her fawn suede flat-heeled ankle boots today, so definitely wouldn’t want to be out in the rain or stepping in puddles) I’m starting to think maybe Tara actually has a chance of getting the managers job after all, even though she’s only been working for the company a mere six months.

I’m sure Jenny would have liked that answer... Tara was a lot like Jenny, but much easier on the eyes. so found out that some people use UHMW feet instead of PTFE feet. UHMW is a plastic that's like 99% as slippy as PTFE but much more durable. while researching I found a guy that used a UHMW sheet as a mouse pad. Jenny was sort of laughing when she said “Helen tells me you cleaned Tara’s boots and her sneakers.” The Hole in the Wall gang/gangster reference is to the ACTUAL hitw gang, a band of outlaws from the Old West. Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid were members For various reasons, there seem to be a lot of animosities amongst the various staff members. It’s not an enjoyable work environment at the moment, and I’m way too busy and stressed (which is mostly why I still haven’t gotten round to finishing the Mardi and Beatlemania stories yet).

Tara sighed and said “If only I’d asked you to get my lunch today, none of this would have happened!” The week starting June 8 was pretty uneventful. I made Tara her coffee twice a day. On the Thursday it was cold and windy outside, so Tara asked me to go and get her lunch. And on the Friday, Tara asked me to bring two reams of A4 paper to her office. I assumed this would be about the incident at reception today, and maybe might even drag up last weeks incident involving me, Tara and Helen. I was actually a bit worried about it. Tara stared at me and said “It only takes a minute or two to go to the ATM... “, then she shook her head before saying “Seriously, why on earth would you want to pay for the repairs to my heels?” As soon as I’d finished drying her sole, I said “That one’s done!”, and gently lowered her left foot to the floor.

Replacing Tara’s right boot on the floor, I started work on polishing her other boot. Tara was eating her lunch the whole time, sometimes stopping to laugh or ask questions. At the time, I didn’t know the entire story about what had happened, but I knew at least half the details, and I had heard the entire shouting match between Bernadette, Helen and Lynn. I asked why not and Tara said “Wellll... I’ve only been working here six months and I’ve already made one complaint... about Andrew harassing me. I don’t want to get a reputation as someone who is always complaining about other people. I think having such a reputation might have an adverse effect on my chances for promotion.” I know this is crazy, but I actually prefer everyone thinking I’m just a pathetic old fool trying to hook up with a young lady half my age. (oh yeah... that’s much better)Tara said “Well, I think it would be a much happier working environment if Helen left. So please have a think about it.” On her resume, Helen claimed to be fluent in three other languages: Mandarin, Spanish and French. However, that is totally untrue... and even her English could do with some improvement. When I delivered Tara’s lunch, she wanted to talk about Jenny’s visit. I sat in a chair next to Tara and started telling her about how Jenny had told Helen off in Brian’s office. Tara sat eating her lunch, sometimes laughing at the tale of Helen’s comeuppance. Helen said “Don’t call ME stupid!!!! You DO treat us like scum!! You treat the office staff like we’re shit!! And act all high and mighty!! Tell us to make you coffee!! I wish I HAD made you a coffee that day!... So I could’ve SPAT IN IT!!!!”

Grinning, Tara said “Exactly! I want Helen to see you cleaning my boots and throw another one of her temper tantrums.” It was soon clean, so I said “That’s fine. Now I’ll just dry it off.” I pulled out my handkerchief and started wiping Tara’s boot with it.She continued telling me “I went to my cousin’s engagement party on Saturday! I didn’t want to go, but my parents made me go. It was at a winery and we were all walking around on loose stones most of the day! Loose stones and wet lawns! It was disgusting!”
