The debate between which is the superior of the first two Oasis albums has raged for decades, but in our opinion, this is something of a no brainer. Where … Morning Glory had a couple of songs that were good but not great, the weakest moment on Definitely Maybe is still a minimum 8/10, and the majority of it is 10/10 perfect. So, what could come above one of the best-selling albums in UK chart history? Only one of the greatest debut albums in history.

Cliff Richard eyes a 48th Top 10 record with Cliff with Strings – My Kinda Life (4). Celebrating a career spanning 65 years, the collection features some of Cliff’s biggest hits, reworked with orchestral arrangements by Chris Walden. Manchester-born indie icon Johnny Marr hopes to secure his fifth Top 10 album with Spirit Power: The Best of Johnny Marr this week (6), while American indie-pop savant Caroline Polachek is looking towards her first UK Top 10 album with her second LP Desire, I Want To Turn Into You (7) thanks to a new physical release. Van Morrison’s Accentuate The Positive is expected to give the Northern Irish icon his 17th UK Top 10 Albums Chart entry (9). Now, to mark the silver anniversary of the 1998-released B-sides project, The Masterplan will be made available to fans in various new formats on November 3, including CD, cream cassette, and a limited run of double vinyl in a slew of colors. The Masterplan instantly validates its existence by promoting the band’s most beloved B-side into the momentous album opener it deserved to be. Originally appearing on the stopgap “Some Might Say” single released between Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory, “Acquiesce” is the ultimate Oasis song: a sibling rivalry in musical form, a dramatic title-fight showdown between Liam’s swagger and Noel’s sweetness that sees the brothers trading verses and choruses instead of insults and fisticuffs. After Noel had ceded all lead vocals to Liam on Definitely Maybe, “Acquiesce” was the first real sign that the elder Gallagher wasn’t just the silent tunesmith communicating via his brother’s megaphone wail: He was an equally vital voice within the songs as well.

Scottish singer King Creosote is a new entry midweek at Number 23 with I Des, while Dire Straits aim to claim their first Official Albums Chart entry in three years with Live 1978-1992 (25).Should it hold on, it’ll become the band’s first chart-topping LP in 13 years; since 2010 hits compilation Time Flies… (1994-2009). The ‘masterplan’ was first mentioned in Noel’s flat,” recalls original Oasis drummer Tony McCarroll in Oasis: The Truth, his memoir. The occasion McCarroll describes took place not long after the band was discovered by Creation Records boss Alan McGee in 1993. He writes that one day before practice he was over at lead guitarist and songwriter Noel Gallagher’s apartment in central Manchester when Gallagher revealed his strategy for world domination: Oasis would have more swagger than the Stone Roses, be wilder than Happy Mondays, and write songs that were at least better than Inspiral Carpets, all while proclaiming themselves to be the best until everyone believed them. It took only a few years for Noel’s scheme to come to fruition, and by late 1998 they were already capping off their commercial peak with an album of B-sides titled to echo their own sense of destiny. That collection, The Masterplan, came out 20 years ago tomorrow, on November 3, 1998. Album – Classifica settimanale WK 45 (dal 03.11.2023 al 09.11.2023)" (in Italian). Naming the best two Oasis albums is something of a cliché at this point, but it’s a cliché for a reason, they really are, comfortably, leagues ahead of the rest of the band’s discography. … Morning Glory was an absolute smash when it arrived, breaking records for sales and chart positions in the UK and giving us a set of songs that have crossed over into the lexicon of British culture to the point where you can’t imagine meeting someone who doesn’t know all the words to Wonderwall.
