About this deal

There was a boxing club in almost every community in the city and it kept me out of trouble and many others like me." Instead of finding a great land mass to balance those of the northern hemisphere, Cook initiated the first Māori-European interaction since Abel Tasman’s brief encounter in 1642. In his remarkably accurate charting of New Zealand and his dealings with Māori, Cook displayed his excellence as a navigator and his essential humanity.

You can read James story in his wonderful autobiography written with his good friend Melanie Lloyd, but in the meantime why not listen to this really engaging charming chat with James right here. This is Your London Legacy

James Cook Height, Weight & Measurements

The 29-year-old Yarde is now 20-2 (19 KOs), having been stopped in 11 in a gallant challenge for Sergey Kovalev’s WBO light-heavyweight title in August 2019. He then dropped a split decision to Lyndon Arthur in December for the Commonwealth title. Smith decided to take his new charge “on the road in Europe”, never an easy undertaking and losses were incurred in Germany, Netherlands, France and Finland. James Cook was born in 1728 at Marton-in-Cleveland, Yorkshire, England. In 1746 he moved to the port of Whitby, where he was apprenticed to a shipowner and coal shipper. As a sailor in the North Sea coal trade the young Cook familiarised himself with the type of vessel which, years later, he would employ on his epic voyages of discovery.

James began running the club in the 1990s while working as an outreach worker in Clapton - an area dubbed “murder mile” at the time due to its high murder rate. He hopes to receive 1,000 signatures by November 5 and will pass the petition to Councillor Chris Cliffe who will present it to the council. James formed a management committee in the 1990s and has been fighting to keep the club open ever since. He served 10 years on the North American station, where he developed skills in marine surveying and navigation. In 1768 he was appointed to command a scientific expedition to the Pacific Ocean. His primary objective on this voyage was to observe the transit of Venus across the disc of the sun in Tahiti, while his secondary objective was to search for the fabled great southern continent.

Picture: Razvan Pestean (Image: Razvan Pestean) Cook’s voice softened considerably as he spared a thought for Lyndon Arthur. “I understand the way Lyndon is feeling, because Lyndon now is probably thinking he’s let his people down and he’s let his camp down, just like how I felt when I went to Shefield to fight Herol ‘Bomber’ Graham. I felt that I didn’t perform and I felt rotten. But, as you go along experiencing boxing, you realise this is boxing. So Lyndon shouldn’t beat up himself about what Anthony done. To me, Lyndon is like a quiet James Cook. There’s no hype about him. He’s just calm and relaxed. But sometimes you have to make noise and, when you fight, you’ve got to fight rugged. My personal opinion of Lyndon is that he is a nice, pleasant young man and he’ll come again. Believe me, he’ll definitely come again.”

Many of his contests took place in hotel and sporting club settings, but he won the vacant Southern Area middleweight crown at the Royal Albert Hall stopping Tony Jenkins in the ninth session of a scheduled ten rounder. What I like about these guys is they listen, they are a young team who are willing to learn from someone who has been there and done it. I am here to correct them and say ‘you know what, this is what you do in this situation’,” added the 62-year-old, who will bring both experience and calm to punching proceedings. Last weekend Yarde turned in a career-best performance to comprehensively turn the tables on Arthur in their Commonwealth title rematch, stopping the Mancunian in four rounds. As captain on three voyages of discovery in the late eighteenth century, James Cook became the first European to define the outline of New Zealand. Thanks to Cook’s detailed charts, and his gentlemen passengers’ scientific and artistic documentation, accurate knowledge of New Zealand was available in Europe for the first time from the 1770s.
