Description

The tent is relatively easy to set up, even if you’re doing it by yourself. It weighs more than some other 6-person tents (22.5 pounds), so it’s definitely a car camping tent, but it’ll provide a comfortable home away from home at a reasonable price. It comes with three doors, which can make a big difference if you have 6 people staying the night in one space. This is a hard feature to come by, as nearly every 6 person tent we tested only provided two doors. What we like: All the benefits of the Wonderland above with seemingly endless customization for basecamping. All that extra space means that the Highrise will actually sleep four campers on full sized sleeping pads.

The North Face takes both its name and inspiration (and logo, for that matter) from the famous Half Dome granite formation in Yosemite National Park. It’s a fitting moniker for a company that started in 1968 as a Bay Area climbing supply company, but climbing is just the tip of the iceberg for The North Face nowadays as they make everything from hardcore mountaineering supplies to trail running shoes, as well as some of the best camping tents on the market like the Wawona series tested here. As long as it’s 20 lb. 15 oz. weight is not an issue for you, there’s not much wrong with this tent. In reality, it is very hard to find a lighter 6-person tent out there, but the Big Agnes Big House 6-Person tent is slightly lighter.Tall people may prefer this design to that of a dome-style tent as they can stand up and move around more easily. Pop-Up Tents Even the 4P version of the Nemo Aurora Highrise includes standup height ceilings, which adds a ton of livability in any camping tent. A vestibule or awning gives you the option to sit outside undercover and store bulky pieces of camping gear. The new Skydome 4 was an easy choice for this list because it combines a roomy floorplan and respectable peak height with a full-length rainfly that’s built to handle serious precipitation. We feel that this new model is a clear cut above the usual Coleman fare, which often relies on single wall designs or partial flys, yet it still comes in at a very Coleman price.

If you sleep on a cot, this may also mean that you have to move the cot further into the center of the tent to avoid rubbing up against the tent wall. Tunnel Tents The Kingdom 6 won out as the best all around tent, but I’d recommend reading our review of the Wawona below as the two tents have different pros and cons and will suit various campers. The included footprint adds additional value to this well-constructed tent. The mesh is 40D polyester, the tub floor is 68D ripstop polyester, and the poles are DAC Pressfit aluminum. The interior square footage is small, but dual vestibules help to keep everything you don't need for sleeping separate. And while very lightweight, you'll sacrifice headroom in the tradeoff. Overall, this tent is small but mighty and a great addition to any campers toolbox, depending on your needs. Excellent interior space, reliable weather protection, and an impressive “gear garage” vestibule. Premium tent quality at an affordable price point. See Review We hope you’re as blown away by this review as we were when we tested this tent in the Great Outdoors.Because these support poles extend well beyond the body of the tent, they create an “awning effect” once the rainfly is in place. This allowed us to leave both windows wide open for extra views and tons of airflow in everything but the most intense wind-blown rains. Our testers also lauded the Aurora Highrise for its bright colors and unique printed floor, high-quality and highly-durable materials, and excellent all-around build quality. We’ll also note that some models nowadays come with covered windows that can be left open rain or shine. These designs usually cost a bit extra, but there’s nothing like having extra airflow and a view of the outside world to keep claustrophobia to a minimum. Ease of Set-up This is also one of the easiest pitching tents we’ve ever used, and Marmot’s combination of clear color coding and a linked pole system makes the Tungsten an absolute breeze to pitch by yourself. Ventilation is also a highlight here, and the rainfly’s double vents combined with an abundance of mesh in the canopy keep this tent breathing easily, even in heavy rain when it’s all zipped up. We’ve been outspoken fans of the North Face Wawona line of tents for some time, so it should come as no surprise that the Wawona 6 takes our top honors as the best waterproof tent overall. This tent also took top honors in our recent camping tent field test, and our testers all had universal acclaim for just about every aspect of the Wawona.

The Alps Mountaineering Camp Creek 6-person tent is an excellent option for car campers who want a tent for 2-3 season camping without the price tag of a premium brand. There’s plenty of room to hang out under the Bunk House’s vestibule, but you can extend it even further as a pole-supported awning.

For your home away from home in the outdoors, we break down the year’s top tents for camping from premium to budget

Our main concern with the Aurora Highrise is that because it’s a relatively new design (Nemo just launched it in 2022), its long-term durability is still relatively unknown. We’ll also point out that the six-person model costs the same as the North Face Wawona 6 above, but doesn’t include the Wawona’s gear garage. It’s a bit easier to pitch and has the added benefit of a full-coverage rainfly though, so you really can’t go wrong with either. Read our full test and review of the Nemo Aurora Highrise (4 person model)… Pros: This tent has one of the best uses of space we have ever seen, a great choice for families or campers with lots of gear Many budget-oriented tents compromise in interior livability, but that’s certainly not the case with Coleman’s Montana 8P. This model stretches a substantial 16 feet in length, has a tall 74-inch peak height (the side rooms are shorter), and includes near-vertical walls that maximize the usable space. A single side door is placed right in the center, which does limit ease of entry/exit, but the sheer size of the thing makes it a nice match for groups of four to six people. Simply put… if you’re looking for a 6-person tent that’s an all-around star at an affordable price, you probably won’t find a better option.
