With each book we are asking, would a child reading at that level be able to access this text and what would challenge them? The answers to these questions are unique to each book. Each line of text is counted as a complete sentence. All students who took the reading assessments in 2022 were asked if they ever attended school from home or somewhere else outside of school for any duration during the last school year (2020–21) because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Among fourth-grade students, 57 percent recalled learning remotely during the last school year, 20 percent reported they did not learn remotely, and 23 percent did not remember. Among eighth-grade students, 75 percent recalled learning remotely during the last school year, 16 percent reported they did not learn remotely, and 8 percent did not remember.For confident and super-confident readers it is important that books are matched appropriately to their emotional maturity. For this reason, Badger Learning collate specific book collections for confident readers where extra emphasis is put on the content being absolutely spot on and not inappropriate for their chronological age even though the reading age is higher. Throughout the year, your child's teacher will gradually move your child step by step into more difficult text, providing guided instruction along the way. At home, you can support the reading in the classroom by providing just-right books at the appropriate level for your child to read independently.

Using standardized assessments, schools will often measure a child’s reading level several times a year to help them select books that are appropriate for independent reading. Guided Reading Levels (GRL) Kids often choose books that are a little below their actual reading level. At home, this is perfectly fine. It keeps reading fun and engaging! We recommend choosing books that interest your child—maybe with a certain character or activity they like—so they’re curious and excited about reading.

It’s helpful to determine your child’s reading level so you can find books that are appropriate for them to read on their own: not too difficult, but challenging enough to encourage growth.
