About this deal

Despite having a name that is reminiscent of an energy drink, McBoost delivers a robust boost with impeccable presentation. It boosts any low-level microphone you hurl at it. The price tag may pinch a bit, but it’s what you pay for the highest possible standard and most stable in-line boost. As of writing, the FetHead is significantly cheaper than the CL-1. The lower price point doesn’t mean the device is any less rugged, however, as the metal shielded enclosure is sturdy and of a premium build quality. Testing the Two It also features a dedicated buffer amp to give you a consistent +28 dB gain boost regardless of the connected load. Moreover, it does a great job at rejecting RF and electrical interference, which makes it desirable for on-location use. Verdict

Offering a massive +28db gain boost, it’s also the winner in terms of the raw gain it provides. You’d just need to make sure it wasn’t too ‘hot’ of a signal for the mic and mixer/audio interface combo you’re looking to pair it with. The last thing you want is to have to move too far away from the mic to avoid clipping as your audio quality will suffer as a result. In most cases though, this shouldn’t be an issue but it’s worth keeping in mind when researching your options. FetHead Phantom is specially designed for condenser microphones. It works very well with all condenser microphones.FetHead Phantom is also an indispensable toolfor mobile recording and a real upgrade for camera microphone preamps, because it lowers the noise floor.Despite not being a traditional preamp, Cloudlifters have become a recognizable name and device for a reason. Using this low noise solution to increase loudness is a game-changer for low output microphones. Cloud Microphone’s Cloudlifters offer a powerful effect at a lower price point than many competitors. Key takeaway: The FetHead has a simple design and solid all-metal construction with a small size that fits seamlessly in mic setups. Unlike the CL-1 the FetHead can be plugged in at any stage of the signal flow. This is a major advantage as this means you can use the device with just one XLR. As for the amount of the boost that the FetHead gives you, it’s specified as being 27 dB by Triton. This varies by load impedance, however, so you may find that you get a higher or lower boost depending on your connections.

Inspired by the positive results of the BigAmp we wondered if a phantom powered, high quality preamp preceding the microphone cable could improve the sound quality of a ribbon or dynamic microphone. the results were more then convincing. Enter FetHead, our latest innovation in phantom powered preamp design. While testing FetHead we noticed an overall increase of sound quality and a change of tonal character of the attached dynamic microphone towards a more open, controlled sound. So, be sure to use the correct version of FetHead (i.e., with or without phantom power passthrough) with your mic! When Would You Use A FetHead? AVVERTENZE! Because Cloudlifters offer a drastic, almost night-and-day difference with a certain type of passive mic, many audio professionals swear by them. Made in Canada, the McBoost is constructed with a 14-gauge steel I-beam inner frame and uses high quality, batch-sorted components so from a robustness point of view, there’s little to worry about. The gain boost is provides is typical of the mic activators we’re looking at coming in at +25db. As mentioned above though, there are different level options to choose from via the switch which adds a little more flexibility. If you’re in the market for a mic activator that gives a clean gain boost, you’ll likely read plenty about the FetHead vs Cloudlifter debate. In this article, we’ll cover the pros and cons of these devices. In the end, you’ll have a much better idea of which inline mic preamp will best suit your needs!

Customer reviews

Performance-wise, it can add up to 27 dB of clean gain to low-impedance signals. FET-based designs have a reputation for sounding remarkably clean. The FetHead too has no issues with noise, assuming that the signal has clean gain at the primary level from the preamp. Overall, the key differences in the FetHead vs Cloudlifter debate come down to small use-case differences. If you’re constantly performing on the road in small venues, FetHead’s portability may convince you. Another scenario to consider is if you’re recording loud sounds with your dynamic mic—drums or loud voices, for instance. In these instances, you may not require the boost that FetHead provides. The Triton Audio FetHead is an economical, portable, and easy to use alternative to a Cloudlifter. It does exactly as advertised, and it does that as well, if not better, than the competition at a significantly lower price point. I highly recommend it to anyone who doesn’t want to pay extra for bells and whistles and just needs to cleanly boost their mic signal. Other than these situations, a FetHead can be a great addition to your mic setup if you need a clean boost to the level of your dynamic or ribbon microphone. Detailed Review
