About this deal

Learn all about the Sikh faith and the Sikh Gurus in this fantastic explainer video from Twinkl Kid's TV. I never knew about Guru Nanak's arms, but I am told that Guru Ram Das had a really LONG beard, so most pictures of him have this and that's how I know it is a representation of him. Guru Gobind Singh is OFTEN shown on his horse, Guru Hargobind always has 2 swords, etc. So certain things are consistent for each Guru in the paintings and pictures we have.

Although he was a very peaceful man, he didn't abolish the army that his grandfather - Guru Hargobind - had created. Instead, he distanced himself from it physically and never used it himself to solve conflicts with the Empire. Guru Nanak and the Boulder is a story that teaches us about how to get rid of our pride and by taking the teachings of the scriptures, accepting them, following them, it will bring inside us compassion, humility, truth and contentment. And these are the virtues we all need to live an honest life. After the death of Guru Arjan, the Sikh community went through a profound change. For 100 years, they had developed a deep meditative tradition founded in peace and tolerance. After the sacrifice of his father, however, Guru Hargobind recognized the need for the community to be able to defend itself. This started the martial practice of the Sikhs. Guru Hargobind became a powerful warrior and trained the Sikhs to fight. Guru ( / ˈ ɡ uː r uː/, UK also / ˈ ɡ ʊr uː, ˈ ɡ ʊər-/; Sanskrit: गुरु, Punjabi: ਗੁਰੂ, IAST: guru) is a Sanskrit term for a " teacher, guide, expert, or master" of certain knowledge or field. [4] Bhai Vir Singh, in his dictionary of Guru Granth Sahib describes the term Guru as a combination of two separate units: "Gu;(ਗੁ)" meaning darkness and "Rū;(ਰੂ)" which means light. [5] Hence, Guru is who brings light into darkness or in other words, the one who enlightens. Bhai Vir Singh's definition provides further insight about Sikhi itself and explains why Guru Granth Sahib is considered the living Guru. The word Sikh is derived from the Sanskrit term shishya [6] ( Punjabi: ਸਿੱਖ) which means a disciple or a student. Thus, Sikhs have a student–teacher relationship with their Gurus since their teachings, written in Guru Granth Sahib, serve as a guide for the Sikhs. Guru Hargobind was born in 1595 and was the son of Guru Arjan. Known as the ‘ soldier saint’, Guru Hargobind was the first of the Sikh gurus to teach people that sometimes it was necessary to take up arms and go to war to defend the faith. This was because he believed that no violence could actually encourage other evils to come about. He also believed that this was a way that people could protect the weak and needy, so he organised a small army. 7. Guru Har Rai (1630-1661)

Guru Nanak went to the river Bain to wash, as normal, and did not reappear for three days. On his return, Guru Nanak explained his revelation of God. He is said to have declared, “God is neither Hindu nor Muslim”.

Info

This is why the Guru Granth Sahib means so much to people of the Sikh faith. They see it as more than a holy book, but as another guide that they respect in the same way, and a teacher showing them how to live their lives fully. Guru Granth Sahib is often classed as the 11th Sikh Guru.
