Much sooner than expected, the big day arrived. A 1.9km ocean swim, 90km cycle and 21.1km half-marathon run lay ahead of me; all needing to be completed within an eight and a half hour cut-off time. The biggest unknown for me was the swim leg. While it is not overly physically onerous, a couple of hundred nervous swimmers all heading to the same buoy equates to a stressful thrashfest. But I realised, from the pre-race chatter in the pens, that the swim was an issue for most participants and in a mildly perverse way, this was of some comfort to me. While this chatter echoed my negativity around the swim, I wasn’t alone in my fear. For most of us, the real race began once this was behind us. However, my true passion is in traveling, photography, and finding common ground to which everyone from different cultures can relate. So who is with me when I say if I don’t get my run in I'm a bit grumpy and not really myself? I think we can all agree that without our daily dose of running endorphins we’re all a bit little less than ourselves. For me, running is an expression of who I am. It encompasses all that I have grown to become and captures the very sense of my personality, my beliefs and the things I care about. It is sheer commitment, competitiveness, happiness, the list goes on. Growing up, running was my way of expressing who I am and it is where I feel I am most truly happy and myself. It has allowed me to become a fiercely competitive athlete, brought me to parts of the world I may have never encountered, and introduced me to some of my closest friends. Certainly it has a positive effect on my mind. Not only has it helped me to grow and find myself as a person, it is also a time of my day where I can choose to be and feel what I want. Sometimes, a run can simply just be a run. But other times it can be my time to think, to make decisions, to let go of negative thoughts and enable positive ones to come through. I have never finished a run unhappy, and I have gone on lots of runs I can assure you. Yes, running has a positive effect on my mental state, but the key is to accept this fact and never to become dependant on it. Running should be completed for your love it, so make sure you keep it this way. Don’t leave it become an answer to all of your problems, as it will eventually become a chore.
