It’s two-sided, so when the wind’s blowing you can open up whichever side has leedward shelter, or you can roll up both sides and have a nice wide opening when there’s an epic sunset you want to admire from the comfort of your sleeping bag. With its transverse hoop design, utilising one main alloy pole in the centre and two tiny poles at each end, the Competition 1 still feels relatively spacious for one person. Most people will be able to just about sit up without their head touching the inner’s roof, while the two mini poles ensure improved structure and room at the foot and head ends. There is a large gap between the seam of the tent and the ground when pitched, which might concern some buyers. But worry not – MSR has created an ingenious system that guides rainwater along the seams and onto the ground, not into the tent. If you’re looking for a two-person tent that’s even lighter than the MSR Hubba Hubba, MSR also offers the FreeLite 2. Designed for ultralight adventures of all descriptions, this tent is all about maximum space-to-weight, without compromising too much in terms of overall protection or durability.

The flysheet is 15D ripstop nylon, coated on both sides with MSR’s proprietary Durashield PU, and finished with taped seams. The inner is almost entirely made from 10D polyester micro mesh, with a bathtub groundsheet made of the same material as the rainfly (again 1,200mm HH). The mesh inner keeps the tent weight down while ensuring excellent condensation control. In terms of waterproofing, the Hydrostatic Head rating is 1,200mm. This innovative design uses air poles to lower the weight, and they're surprisingly sturdy, even in bad weather. Inflating it using the included bike pump is speedy and simple. Vango hasn't skimped on the details here, serving up a twin-skin build (important to fend off condensation), as well as a Yunan carbon fibre singular pole which sits at the foot-end of the tent. A cotton thread that expands to seal gaps when wet means there's no seam tape here, shaving a few more grams, while a 7D nylon with a double silicone flysheet should keep the wet stuff outside in all but the worst weather. Negatives: sleeping space could be more generous, and a little pricey compared to similar offerings. From across the pond, we have the Copper Spur HV UL2. Anyone who’s seen or owned an MSR Hubba Hubba 2 will recognise the configuration of the Copper Spur. As designs go, they are very similar which goes to show that MSR is the brand to beat. This series includes designs that have become the industry blueprint for lightweight tent design, winning numerous awards and being used worldwide. Lightweight series models offer a good balance of durability and low weight using a 20 denier nylon ripstop flysheet fabric. This is a high-end tent with a host of impressive features. At 1,200g, there are lighter one-person tents out there, like the Laser Competition 1 for instance, but then none of those will be quite as durable. The 9mm poles the Enan uses are super strong and the outer, which drops all the way to the ground, is made from a sturdy Kerlon 1000 fabric.
