When you’re an immortal being suffused with potent death magic, learning to summon the dead is an appropriate hobby to take up – especially if you want to grow your undead horde. Soulblight Gravelords earned their name by raising massive armies of the dead to fight alongside them. Personally, I love both separate halves of the model. They look stunning, especially in person (tho mine are still on sprue). GW has really went into a higher gear with modelling lately (I have assembled Be'lakor recently and it's another amazing model). But the combined model is meh to me, looks as if they took two excellent sculpts and slapped them together. So I, as many others, will try to make two separate models by converting a head and lower body to these halves, respectively. A super-tall, visually incredible sculpt, this lady is going to be in high demand for Soulblight armies. In a welcome twist, the kit can also be constructed as a generic, non-named-character variant, the Vengorian Lord, which in itself looks pretty ace.

Even their abodes, deep beneath the dunes of the Sascathran Desert, are completely different from other Soulblight keeps. Under the amber sands are vast honeycomb chambers with gnarled fortresses that cling like stalactites to the cavern roofs built by an unknown civilization, now taken over by the Avengorii. Inside Vengorian Lords prowl the darkened corridors, while vaults serve as lairs for the zombified drakes and chiropteran horrors attracted to the aura of the Avengorii. While there is an undeniable similarity the Avengorii are different from the abhorrants of Ushoran and any comparison is considered deeply offensive by the Avengorii. The Avengorii are generally lucid and sane with the majority being well aware of their ghastly appearance and even make a show of revelling in this apparent disgust, although this could simply be a way of coping with the transformation they have wrought unto themselves. [3a] RitualsSoulblight Gravelords form part of the Grand Alliance of Death with everlasting strength and cravings for blood. The eternally hungry monstrosities will carve their way through the Mortal Realms and command legions as requested by their leader, Nagash. Using dark powers they are capable of raising the dead and directing them to commit great acts of violence. One thing I didn't mention in the write up is their fantastic debuff aura reducing the rend of nearby units. This is absolutely one of the biggest reasons to run them, and is amazing support for blood knights especially. Between that, their speed, their combat ability, and being a monster, you can basically read 'undeniable impulse' in the absolute worst case way - ie you can take it as 'this model may not use command abilities ever, with no positive trade off at all' - and they'll still be a good and strong unit option. My frustration with Vengorian rules is entirely them being the closest available alternative to the absent mounted vampire lord (unless your opponent allows anvil of apotheosis), while really not quite working as that. If you can set that aside and just view them as entirely their own thing - or maybe as an alternative to the long gone Vampire Lord on Abyssal Terror - then they really are very good.
