Multibike Garages: Journalist and tour planner Simon Weir

When it comes to age, older generations are dominating the roads. Of the 3.6 million riders across the country, almost half (48%) are over 60 and only 10% are under 39 – a mere 0.01% are under 20. However, Scotland and the South West lead the way for the nation’s younger rider demographic. In the two areas, which have some of the largest biking populations, a fifth (20%) of motorcyclists were under 20. He took them to the place where he threw the knife and it was the place where the murder weapon was found. He didn’t tell us the whole truth , but he was cooperative. They had their own hierarchy and structure, and became more visible in their activities as they vied for power with other groups.”On day three we leave Beccles and make a plan to return to the coast along the A143. However, courtesy of human error and poor prior planning, one wrong turn is followed by several more and despite the Sat-Nav working correctly, today’s version of myself was not. Following the success of Bikers' Britain, which contained more than 70 short routes and tours, author and deputy editor of RiDE magazine Simon Weir has come up with 44 routes, most created specifically for this book. From Liverpool through the Queensway Tunnel, we follow the A41 to Eastham. We pull up to a popular bike haunt called the Tap Pub. Overlooking the River Mersey as the sun sets in a blend of orange and purple, I take one last look at a city with everlasting character and vibrancy. The Liverpool city skyline across the water is admired by both locals and those passing by. Everyone takes a moment with their thoughts over a cold beer on a warm evening. Bliss. With the moment captured in a photo, we get on our bikes and head into Wales and a little village near Mold. The A496 will take you to Barmouth with fleeting glimpses of water to your right as you head south. As you continue towards Pen-y-brynwhere there are rolling cliff sides to your left accompanying you on your journey. About halfway along this road is a very easy to miss side road, it looks like the entrance to a private estate and is advertised as such, however this road is passable to the public and grants access to a toll bridge. This bridge does have opening times but I can’t report what it’s like because it’s closed as we arrive. Each episode will see Andi’s creative sparks fly, devising unique themed dishes to serve up on the big day. For inspiration, she’ll meet local chefs and suppliers, getting to grips with the regional produce and recipes that make the area special.

I’ve been a journalist since the early 90s and started working as a bike tester in 2003 – first on Bike, then fleetingly on Performance Bikes, then for 10 years on RiDE where I managed to spend a lot of time riding around Europe to create touring guides. That was hard work, I can tell you… That description fitted almost every member of the Hell’s Angels. But Mike points out: “Although the group dressed in what was seen as traditional Hell’s Angels clothing, and was referred to in the media as such, a number of them actually came from the United Bikers of Great Britain . The original plan from here was to do a full circuit of Anglesey, while ironically not visiting the Anglesey circuit. Unfortunately, we can’t afford the time, so we cross the Menai Bridge because I had to show Jess the quaint and beautiful nearby town of Beaumaris and stop for fish and chips by the pier.Trouble erupted at 1.15am on June 2, 1981, as 300 partygoers spilled out of a taxi drivers’ fancy dress ball organised to raise funds for charity.

I’m also an advanced riding instructor – and while I’m RoSPA and BMF qualified, I have one simple aim: to make riding more enjoyable. On the other hand, the North East ranked in fourth place for how many riders live there. The region is home to 311,403 motorcyclists, less than half the South East’s figure of 689,494. However, this area of Britain has the highest number of motorcyclists among its population, with 11,616 people per 100,000 riding motorcycles compared to 7,480 per 100,000 people in the South East. Mr David Jones, prosecuting, claimed all seven were either apprentices or full members of the United Bikers of Great Britain. At the police station, he admitted it was him and thanked the officers for dealing with him in such a reasonable way.” Sometime later, Paul decided to pursue a career in medicine. ‘Tinkering with bikes certainly had an influence on my decision to become a surgeon because I was – and still am – fascinated by how lots of individual components fit together and work and, as with a motorcycle, so too with the human body.’Once again, it is the South East and North East that rank top of our leaderboards. While the South East had the most new motorcyclists in 2021, the North East had the most riders per 100,000 people at 96. Another early start. We ride out of Watermouth Valley at around 6:30am and, inspired by the Biker’s Britain tour guide, we take a series of B-roads through the North Devon Coast before passing through Barnstaple and onto the A39. We follow the A39 down to Whitecross past Wadebridge. The A389 takes us towards St Issey where we ride as close as we can to the Trevose Head Heritage Coast. In the height of summer it can get busy, with the single-lane roads on the west coast struggling to cope. The shoulder season of April/May and September/October might be preferable, with quieter roads, fewer midges and often better weather than in the summer. After a year or two, the temptation to be out in the open air, enjoying the physical sense of motion you just don’t get in a car, became too strong and he bought a Yamaha Virago, a Japanese pastiche of a Harley-Davidson V-twin, ‘because I couldn’t afford a Harley at the time!’ he laughs.

Once again, Greater London found itself in last place – contending with the huge and constantly growing population. Only 31 new riders per 100,000 people could be found in London in 2021. As we teeter on the cusp of middle age, our thoughts often turn to the pursuits and passions of our youth – and in particular to those pleasures that raising a family and chasing a career so often oblige us to abandon. Starting in Skegness as a suggestion, where cheap accommodation makes for an early start the next morning, the route traces up the east coast, through Mablethorpe and out into the Lincolnshire Wolds to the Humber Bridge. Over the Humber Bridge and if you have the time head east all the way out to Withernsea and follow the coast from there. That road is particularly good; quiet, twisty, well sighted, with Flamborough Headworth stopping at once you get to the top. On to Scarborough and the A171 all the way up to Whitby. This is a lovely road with some nice sweeping corners, though watch out for some of the hidden dips and corkscrews. Whitby itself is a highlight of the UK in my book, with some good YHA accommodationat the Abbey if you’re after something different, and cheap.saw 3.6 million licensed motorcyclists ride across Britain. Our nation’s bikers travel a staggering 4.4 billion miles across the country on two wheels each year. GhostBikes aims to provide customers with top quality products at the lowest prices possible, offering customers a fantastic price promise guarantee together with an unrivalled customer support. They’re insulated in their cars and they’re not thinking about what’s going on outside them. But I’ll carry on riding ad infinitum… I can’t think of anything more depressing than not being able to.’ A great place to stay is the biker friendly Haggs Bank Bunkhouseand camping in Nenthall, just outside Alston. It’s run by a keen biker and perfectly set up to take groups.
