The Springbank Distillery is not only the oldest family owned distillery in Scotland, it also produces 3 distinct brands of whisky – Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn. Last month we tried their lightly peated and 2.8 times distilled brand, the Springbank 15 year old and this month for our members we have our hands on one of their non-peated brand, The Hazelburn and specifically, the Hazelburn 10 year old. A mighty fine drop of triple distilled single malt whisky – which is unusual for Scottish whiskies which are normally double distilled. Enjoy! Part of the Hazelburn core range, this is a 10 year old bottling of Hazelburn single malt Scotch whisky from the Springbank distillery in the Campbeltown region. It is triple distilled, matured in bourbon casks and bottled at 46% ABV. On the palate there are notes of marshmallow and candy floss, with a syrupy mouthfeel and subtle mineral note. The earthy tone from the nose carries through. We looked into the history of the Springbank Distillery last month, so rather than rehash that, let’s look into how Springbank saved the Campbletown region from being de-listed as an ‘official’ whisky region. Hazelburn is one of three styles of whisky produced at Springbank, known for being triple distilled and unpeated, whereas Springbank single malt is distilled two-and-a-half times and is lightly peated, and Longrow single malt is twice distilled and heavily peated.
