According to the product labeling, a person should apply 1–2 drops to their eyes before they go to sleep. Lubricating eye drops act like a person’s tears. They support the natural film of tears on the eye and increase moisture. Use the carmellose sodium eye drops within the expiry date on the bottle. Use them within 4 weeks of opening, unless your drops come with different instructions. This will help to prevent the risk of eye infections and the eye drops not working so well. Ask a pharmacist if you are not sure. Overusing eye drops can cause irritation. A person can follow the instructions given by the manufacturer to avoid irritation.

There are no other eye drops that contain both carmellose sodium and glycerol as the active ingredients. Optive Plus ®(carboxymethylcellulose 0.5%, glycerine 1%, castor oil 0.25%) is also non-formulary - see above. The equivalent formulary product containing mineral oil is Systane Balance. This long lasting protection and relief from dry eyes may make this eye gel beneficial for people who look at digital screens, such as their phone or a computer, for long periods. A person can use these gel drops during the day or at night. The body produces tears from glands above the eyes. The tears spread over the cornea when a person blinks, then drain into the tear ducts, which sit between the nose and the inside corners of the eyes. Medicines suitable to be prescribed in primary care / general practice after specialist* recommendation or initiation.

Severity of symptoms: Some gel eye drops are only suitable for mild symptoms. Others are suitable for moderate or severe ones. Treatment with carmellose sodium may be long term if your dry eyes are caused by conditions such as: You can use carmellose sodium only as needed if your dry eyes symptoms come and go. This product may suit people whose eyes are dry at night, as GenTeal does not recommend these gel drops for the daytime. General Use. May be initiated by primary or secondary care. Suitable for non specialist prescribing. These eye drops should not be used for more than six months after the bottle is first opened. This is because after this time they could be contaminated with dirt or germs that could cause eye infections. Write the date of opening on the bottle so you know when to throw them away. Dispose of them carefully, preferably by returning them to your pharmacy.

Unlicenced supplies of proxymetacaine 0.5% eye drops 10ml (contains preservative: benzalkonium chloride) may be sourced, lead times vary.
