There’s a term in psychology called ‘attribution error’. This means if something goes wrong, and that makes you think negatively about yourself, you think the negative thought is true about lots of things in your life, and it’s going to be true forever. For example, if you fail an exam, you might think, “I’m stupid,” instead of “that was a really hard exam that most people would struggle with.” What kinds of things can you do to start developing a stronger relationship with yourself? What kinds of things do you feel you need to overcome so that you can get closer to self-acceptance and confidence? Implicit’ means something isn’t directly being said to you – its meaning is something you interpret yourself. It’s very common for people to interpret implicit messages in different ways – for some people it can be more positive, for others more negative. For example, if someone is posting on social media about being in the gym, you might get the implicit message that you’re lazy because you’re not in the gym. Keeping a self-esteem journal is a great way for children to begin thinking about the good things that they do and experience, setting them up for a positive outlook on life. This worksheet lists three-sentence completion prompts for each day of the week, starting with Monday.This activity uses a very basic technique that you can build upon as needed. The point of this activity is to help your client identify meaningful goals that are connected with their personal values. Research in positive psychology has shown that learning to use strengths in new ways can improve well-being. Strengths-based interventions involve identifying strengths, understanding how they are used, and learning new ways to apply them. The second prompt, Reflections, encourage you to elaborate on them. Research suggests that this reflection builds on the positive impacts of simply listing things that you’re grateful for, by focusing your thoughts on them in detail. For instance, you might use this last row to consider what things might look like if you didn’t have that supportive partner or that ability to be patient. We’ll provide several methods and activities for building self-esteem, starting with self-esteem worksheets for young children and ending with self-esteem worksheets for adults. When children feel good about themselves, it paves the way for the future. Children who have low self-esteem may even perform below their full potential in school and make poor decisions (Kids Play and Create, n.d.).
