Kristin Scott Thomas as Diana Taverner, the deputy director-general of MI5 and head of operations and designated "Second Desk". Spook Street is one of the darker novels and what little comic relief there is, is provided by Roddy Ho getting a girlfriend, a plot thread which is pulled in the follow up novel, London Rules. It also lays the ground for the events of Joe Country, and at the same time introduces a series villain, ex-CIA operative Frank Harkness. This novel is a series highlight for me, and went on to win the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger Award as well as being shortlisted for the CWA Gold Dagger Award, The British Book Awards and The Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award. The CWA Gold Dagger Award-winning British espionage novel about disgraced MI5 agents who inadvertently uncover a deadly Cold War-era legacy of sleeper cells and mythic super spies. Plotting is pretty much secondary to me. What really interests me is the characters and getting to grips with them, and them getting to grips with each other.” BOOK RATING: The Story 4 / 5 ; The Writing 4.5 / 5 — Overall 4.25 Get your copy of Dead Lions from: Lamb – I do feel I have to include him – there is much I dislike about him but he is also engaging and loyal when his team are threatened (by anyone other than himself) and yes he does, as The Guardian interview with Herron suggests, bear echoes of Falstaff, unlikeable but compelling in a horrible way.Herron (Down Cemetery Road, 2009, etc.) provides a dour, twisty spy thriller with something for everyone: part post–Cold War miasma, part James Bond heroics, and elliptical withal. Deputy-Director General Diana Taverner approaches another member of Slough House, Jed Moody, and instructs him to do some " off book" work for her. Two other members of Slough House, Min Harper and Louisa Guy, meet in a pub after work and lament their failed careers. River and Sid decide to tail Hobden, but she confesses that she was assigned to Lamb's team to keep tabs on River. The two see a masked man enter Hobden's home and pursue him, discovering upon entry that Hobden was able to destroy his hard drive with thermite. Hobden escapes as River and Sid fight the masked man, who escapes after shooting Sid in the head.

Wiseman, Andreas (11 April 2023). ""'Slow Horses' Season Four: Hugo Weaving, Joanna Scanlan & Ruth Bradley Among Cast To Join Gary Oldman In Apple Spy Series, Filming Underway" ". Deadline. Archived from the original on 11 April 2023 . Retrieved 11 April 2023.Nor does Herron like to protect his slow horses from the real dangers that they face. Let’s be blunt. People die. Characters who you will have liked will not make it to the end of the novel. This does invest the plot with a certain tension and with the exception of Lamb I am not sure I would put money on anyone surviving the next five books. But at least we know that, if any of them end up dead, Lamb’s comments to River will probably hold true for all of them and, I suppose, that beneath the flatulence and racism and antagonism, this probably counts for loyalty or at least courtesy: What better ingredients for a novel than spies that have been placed on the scrap heap with career redemption on their minds and axes to grind? The central conceit of the books is that MI5, like any large organisation, needs somewhere to place its most hopeless employees, and this place is Slough House, a building just around the corner from the Barbican Centre. They’re not allowed anywhere near MI5 HQ, which is referred to as Regent’s Park although the organisation is no longer based there. Herron's short stories have been regularly published in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine and some are collected in the book, All the Livelong Day, published in 2013.

Funny, clever... Genuinely thrilling. The novel is equally noteworthy for its often lyrical prose." - Publishers Weekly Herron provides a dour, twisty spy thriller with something for everyone: part post–Cold War miasma, part James Bond heroics, and elliptical withal.” The character-driven narrative, which does touch on cliche and can be overblown and over-the-top but is generally successful at creating likeable characters whom we care about despite – possibly because – of their failings. This was a strong ensemble cast.
