About this deal

Looking first at sharpness, a fast, bright f/1.4 optic might be expected to start off slightly soft at open aperture, but in fact the new Sigma has very good central sharpness from f/1.4 through to f/2, rising to excellent from f/2.8 through to f/8. Diffraction starts to take hold, as would be expected with the small MFT format, but performance remains very good even at f/11 and f/16. Another point to remember here is that the lens doesn’t have inbuilt stabilisation. Although that’s not so much an issue with some manufacturers, such as the several of the Fujifilm models mentioned here, none of the Nikon Z DX cameras include IBIS. Generally, that shouldn’t really be a problem with a lens this wide, but it’s worth bearing in mind if you’re looking to shoot in certain conditions, such as low light or for vlogging for example. The 16mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary is the world's first interchangeable lens for mirrorless Sony E-mount cameras in the APS-C format to offer a 24mm focal length (35mm equivalent) and F1.4 brightness. The lens for Micro Four Thirds offers a 32mm focal length (35mm equivalent) with the same bright F1.4 aperture. This is the large-diameter wide-angle lens for which mirrorless camera users have been waiting. SIGMACANON EF-M mount. Focusing is usefully internal and manual focusing is possible when set via the camera body. Full-time manual focus override is also available at any time simply by rotating the focus ring.Chromatic aberration (CA) is the lens' inability to focus on the sensor or film all colours of visible light at the same point. Severe chromatic aberration gives a noticeable fringing or a halo effect around sharp edges within the picture. It can be cured in software.

The Sigma 16mm, whose focal length equates to 32mm in 35mm format, offers a marginally wider field of view in comparison to the M.Zuiko 17mm, whose field of view matches that of a 34mm lens in 35mm format. It is not a superbly sharp lens, but it is certainly impressively sharp and more than capable of capturing detailed images and making nice prints. Even when uncorrected in-camera, vignetting is fairly minimal for such a fast, wide-angle lens. Stop down to f/2 and it becomes fairly unnoticeable. Ghosting and flare are also well controlled, and the same goes for barrel distortion. For weight, it comes in at about 14.3oz (405g). This heavy-ish weight, combined with the large size, made it feel slightly off-balanced, if I must admit, on my a6400.

Over the years, many of their lenses have been made out of this material, and generally, it’s shown to be long-lasting, scratch resistant, and strong. The Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN C ships with a good quality plastic circular-shaped lens hood. It accepts 67mm filters. The differences become even more evident when specular highlights (bokeh balls) are involved. Not only are they larger from the Sigma at f/1.4, but they also assume more of a cat’s eye shape than those of the Olympus lens set to f/1.8. E-M1, 1/4, f/1.4, ISO 200 – Sigma 16mm f/1.4 E-M1, 0.4s, f/1.8, ISO 200 – Olympus M.Zuiko 17mm f/1.8 It’s also worth noting that although these lenses are designed for APS-C cameras, you can also use them with full-frame bodies, like the Nikon Z6 II, with the camera automatically switching to crop mode if you do. You might therefore consider it a good alternative to the Nikkor Z 24mm f/1.8 S lens, which costs more than twice that of the Sigma. A bright prime lens is the ideal way to experience the essence of the art of photography. Simply select a focal length that matches the image and enjoy complete control of the depth of field.

Product Overview

In this shot, we can see that there is some rather heavy lens flare from the lamp. This would not be easy to handle during post-processing, so this is something to keep in mind. See the below crop for a better look.
